Rewatch Cro cop vs Nogueira

Mirko is a humble man but there are levels to this sheet.

Someone who beat Remy, Aerts, Hug, LeBanner, Hunt and Bernardo isn't losing to someone who lost to Levin and Kyshenko.
My father trained with Mirko and served in the same unit, I think I know what he thinks a little better than you do

2005 was peak humanity

I was pretty happy in 99...just look at my fun level lol.

Legend has it , or the rumour goes or word around the campfire is
Ever notice how easy Crocop was defending takedowns for the first 10 minutes, and then he gets taken down almost immediately in the second, they say that Nogueira’s corner accidentally ;) spilled some water and Crocop just happened to step in it .
Sounds fucking ridiculous I know , go back and watch it , Crocop gets taken down right in the blue corner & his legs sure come out from underneath him pretty easily all of the sudden.
I’m a huge fan of both guys , it’s just sn old story I wanted to share

Interesting observation going to watch now. Although one thing I have to say is that 10 minute first rounds hit different and exposed fighters with mids cardio.

Mirko spent a lot of energy stuffing clinches and takedowns from Nog while also putting everything he had into knocking him out. He looked tired in his corner after the first round.

Very interesting hearing the commentary.

Imagine someone panicking (today) about merely being in "closed guard" and acting like that was imminent death??

<YayKpop> CLOSED GUARD!?! OH NO!!

Sub defense has come SUCH a long way.

One of the all-time classics, for sure, and probably the GOAT comeback considering the level of ass kicking and the quality of ass kicker Nog had to overcome. But two things worth pointing out that aren't often pointed out as this match recedes further and further into history:

1) That fight was an interim HW title match. Cro Cop was set to challenge Fedor for the PRIDE HW championship that he'd just taken off Nogueira, but he broke his hand on Gary Goodridge's head, so Nog stepped in as the former champ and he and Cro Cop battled for who'd fight Fedor next. Had Fedor not injured himself and fought Cro Cop that night in 2003, I think that 2003 Cro Cop had a better chance at beating 2003 Fedor than 2005 Cro Cop had against 2005 Fedor. At that point in 2003, Cro Cop had never lost in MMA, he'd just annihilated Herring and Igor, he was flying high with all the confidence in the world, he was as fast and explosive as he'd ever be, while Fedor's striking wasn't as sharp, he wouldn't have had the extra two years to study Cro Cop as he watched Cro Cop beat his brother Aleks and their teammate Ibragim Magomedov, and he wouldn't have had the benefit of sharpening his MT with Ernesto Hoost. Always been an interesting "What if?" for me.

2) Nog's comeback is truly the stuff of legend, but as a Cro Cop fan, I'll never not be salty about that rope grab at 12 minutes in the OP vid. Cro Cop spent a few minutes in Nogueira's guard in the first round just to prove that he could survive there. (He'd do the same against Yoshida in the 2006 OWGP.) Imagine if he would've gotten up and the second round had continued on the feet. No way Cro Cop would let the fight go back to the ground again unless it was Nog's body slumping to the canvas. But Nog grabbed the rope to secure the mount, Cro Cop tried to escape again and left his arm exposed, and the rest is history. Another interesting "What if...?"

Perspective is key when watching old fights. Sub defense hasn't come that long a way. HWs just suck at submissions now. Imagine Derrick Lewis or Ciryl Gane in prime Nog's guard. Nog would've eaten them for lunch.

The rose tinted glasses are STRONG in this thread.

It is interesting to rewatch those old fights. Nog's takedowns are pretty bad and CroCop gave him that armbar. CroCop would wait until Nog stops circling and kept throwing those kicks that often landed.

But about every fight was a competitive battle.

If you compare the grappling to Gane Ngannou, or Gane vs Jones.. it's a master-class.

HW was a lot more skilled in Pride than today.

The last generation of HWs is pretty bad, I think mostly due to weight cutting techniques. Poatan would have been a HW back then but he can fight at MW now. There were very few HWs the size of Jones, Gus, Reyes, etc back then.

IMO prime Werdum, JDS, Cain, DC and Stipe would have been very competitive in PRIDE.
