Yeah they could definitely do it and be oppressive to the Muslim population, but I don't think they have the resources and strength to do it in the way that the USSR managed to do it (and as effective) or how the Chinese can. With Israel it also helped that Israel managed to push out many Palestinians into territory outside of Israel's immediate borders (that Israel won after being attacked several times in war). It also' doesn't help that they are an island and it wouldn't be so easy to expel the Muslim population or parts of them as you'd have to drive them into the sea. If he really wanted to wage war on Muslims and succeed i'd imagine sucking up to China could gain some assistance.

Yes or he could pivot them more towards China and other Eastern states which aren't Majority Muslim and won't care to disrupt economic/trade/or communication with them over his harsh policies.

We need oil... our oil comes from the middle east that is why when my uncle gets a full tank of diesel for his jeepney he always check the fuel tank just to make sure no Muslim came with the Disel.

Look at China or how the Soviet Union succeeded in many ways at eliminating religion or heavily watering it down even in the Muslim areas the rates of truly devout, devout and practicing Muslims decreased heavily especially in urban areas and as each new generation was born.

Yeah, but those two are totalitarian regimes. Thailand and the Philippines are still Democracies.
I mean the Nazi's or Italians under Mussolini would probably would have had no issues with Muslims either.
It sort of depends on how much you value or civil rights. Of course, that is where the real danger lies with Muslims terrorism.

If it gets too bad people will see a totalitarian state as the better solution to constant terrorist attacks.

While I like to see some dead terrorist. Being incredibly brutal against the Muslim and terrorist is not a long term solution either.
Thailand has been doing that for 30 years.
With over 6000 casualties in the last 10 years (official Thai numbers who know how high they really are).
Also, it's not a straight up Islamist terror here it also has a strong Nationalistic element.
And whats the solution? Peace talks that results in terrorists taking the country over?

Arab's aren't pushovers either they just are overwhelmingly Muslim and a significant portion of the Arab states of the Middle East ***cough**cough***(The Gulf States) want the supremacy of Islam and in that way radical Islam helps them to a degree. So in other words they tied down by the actions of the Gulf states (namely Saudi Arabia) and their actions to empower radical Sunnis who spread salfaism/wahhabism) and by states like Turkey which previously were okay with islamic radicals in small numbers as long as it weakened other regional rivals.

I mean as a nation.

Of course individually an arab can be a fearsome fighter, but usually when you couple extremism and tribalism.

The militants called for reinforcements and around 100 gunmen entered Marawi, a mostly Muslim city of 200,000 people on the southern island of Mindanao, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Wednesday.

"We are in a state of emergency," Duterte said Wednesday after he cut short a trip to Moscow and flew back to Manila. "I have a serious problem in Mindanao and the ISIS footprints are everywhere."

He said a local police chief was stopped at a checkpoint and beheaded, and added that he may declare martial law nationwide if he believes the group has taken a foothold.

This isn't exactly ISIS as much as a supporting local terrorist group called Abu Sayyaf with Maute support. Both are Islamist radical groups that support ISIS, but have existed on their own in the Philippines for a long time now. Basically ISIS fanboys who mimic them for fear.

The entire country is now under martial law.

@ShinkanPo

Is this true? Is the entire country under martial law as stated in the news? If so what kind of conditions are you facing out there?

I've been praying for you and the your country as a whole brother. I know I'm not there with you, but I'm supporting you the best way I know how to at this point my man.

The entire country? I thought it was just that one single island?

No news or anouncement about a nationwide Martial Law it is still localized in Mindanao Island.

We still have cable and local channels are still on air.

I would asume if Martial law has been declared for the entire nation radio and television will be out just like in 1972 when our president Marcos declared Martial law.

Current News reported that according Philippine Army officials the Marawi City crisis is now under control and that the situation is less serious than what is being circulated in social media.

Further more Army officials states that reports about a police station being set on fire are false.
