International Coronavirus Breaking News, v10: U.K Health Minister has become the first British MP to test positive

This is what worries me about the virus spreading here. It's perfectly normal for Americans to show up for work sick, because it's so expensive to go to the doctor (if we even have insurance or not). A lot of us won't even get checked or take time off when we get the virus, because we won't know we have it. Our awful healthcare situation could bite us hard.

Service industry workers are fucked. They're fucked every flu season and often living paycheck to paycheck.

American bootstrap philosophy in the service industry is this.
"Oh you need to take a day off because you feel like death? Well you better go get a doctor's note to prove it. Oh you don't have health insurance? Didn't a day off just get way more expensive than just working through pain?"

Our PM about two seconds after telling everyone to stop shaking hands.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but its 21 degrees(69.8) in Qom Iran tomorrow.
It was 17(62.6) today abd its predicted to be 25(77) wednesday.

I dont think hotter weather makes a blind bit of difference.

Italy has an aged population compared to a lot of other countries and high rate of smoking both of these are thought to increase the likelihood of death (being old and smoking). They're also testing like mad.
Yeah i know.

My concern is about the number of cases.

The surge of cases in Italy is odd. Unless other EU states arent being that transparent, the numbers are so crazy its insane.

Italy nearly 10k cases and nearly 500 deaths.
Germany, france ans Spain combined 3300 cases

Such an alarming spread in Italy.
That is how epidemics generally work, though, because they grow exponentially. Very slow in the beginning. I think we can say that Italy is past that stage now, waiting for the other countries to catch up as it got a head start on everyone in Europe.

There's a "virus outbreak" every year of every presidential election going back to 04. Think about that.
Right on, bro! And countries are always closing off entire cities and millions of people from the rest of the world to try to contain these outbreaks!

So what happened in Japan then?
Theyve pretty much flatlined. 500 cases.

This is what troubles me the most. I'm aware that there are different strains of this virus, but if they all go on despite temperatures getting higher...there's nothing anyone can do about it. No one has resources to fight this throughout the year. Not to even consider possible further mutations.

That's a very, very good question. I've spent a fair bit of time in Japan (and absolutely love the place), and I have some theories floating around in my head, but I can't say they really add up.... I might still post some of them here later when I can sit down for a few minutes undisturbed.

Fire them away.
Ive been to Japan several times and my Brother in law lives there.
He was panicked about the virus a few weeks back and its since gone really quiet.

I know, I know. China and their reporting and all that. I hope this is true, at least.

Cool, i'm saying it's hard to compare cases because of all the different amounts of testing, The amounts are all over the place, it certainly blew up in a half dozen north Italian towns/cities though.

South Korea has tested 200,000 people, and I feel their data is likely the best we have.

Iran is in panic mode, because their higher ups have contracted and died?

South Korean data might be the best as far as rate of infection, transmissibility, and mortality analysis, but you stated that South Korea has the "highest number of infected people", and that's simply not true. Based on all available data, China has the highest number of infected people.

As far as Iran goes, when people set fire to a clinic that they think may be housing Covid-19 patients, I'd say that's panic mode.

no, it actually works the opposite.

lets say we have 1,000,000 infection, however the death toll remains the same. it actually shows that the virus is rather benign.

With italy's data, there's some sort of lag going on, for instance 3/7-3/8, there was 1400 or so new cases and 133 deaths that day alone, but then the next day, 2000 new cases, yet only 90 deaths, so it'll take a bit of time for the numbers to catch up. Currently, they are now the second worst outside of Wuhan, but in all likelyhood, they've been the worst for a while, testing is just proving it. Give them a few weeks for their numbers to settle because it's a bit unpredictable right now.

*outside of wuhan, that should be implied in all these cases, wuhan has 90K, by far surpassing everyone, and I said previously, that they likely have many more than that.

either way, my data is no longer true because italy surpassed south korea, as of today. Iran likely has a very high count as well, as I doubt they are testing. likely in the thousands.
