So which City do you think got it right?

Austin - Canceling SxSW

or

Houston - Hold my Beer - The Houston Livestock & Rodeo goes on like nothing is happening. 3 weeks of rodeo, concerts, BBQ cookoffs, carnies, etc...

Both events bring in millions for their cities. And Houston is broke as it is... I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they haven't even discussed cancelling the Rodeo from what I've heard on the news. Actually, I don't think the news has even mentioned it. I think right now, there's something like 6 or 7 cases in the area.

Don't know the situation in Austin, but I'm not surprised the mayor rolled over and cancelled. He’s very sensitive to online critics

there are ways around figuring out what's going on aside from tests. Maybe someone with inside access to the big insurance carriers can give us better billing details. I've got some access, but not a ton like the insurance companies (10's of millions would be a good data point). Without getting into too much detail, there should be an overall increase in chest related illnesses (which includes breathing and lung problems associated with the virus).

We have three big festivals coming up that haven't been cancelled. Hell I'll be attending this since my buddy builds the stages and he's sneaking all my booze in for me. We can't afford as a city to cancel this. Hell when the Rolling Stones dropped out last year it was a huge deal.

It's frustrating as shit. The Nola.com Facebook page just reported someone has it and people are under there commenting it's all fake news. Head over to their Facebook page and it's all extremist Trump shit like "Joan Rivers killed for making fun of Mrs Obama".

Americans don't seem well suited to handle an emergency like this. Especially considering the amount of Americans without insurance, and especially considering that a missed paycheck is a disaster for so many of us.

Fulton County Ga, update....a FC school employee tested positive. All Fulton county schools “after school activities”are cancelled today and school is cancelled tomorrow.
I expect that by tomorrow they decide which if any schools will close for a longer period than a day and/or they keep all schools closed a day or 2 more while they figure it out....I’ll think about heading to Costco to see if panic mode has set in....

I feel this is still going to turn out to be a nothing burger just like H1N1 was or a slightly bigger nothing burger or a nothing burger with cheese.....I still believe we’ll know by end of month for sure.

There's a "virus outbreak" every year of every presidential election going back to 04. Think about that.

"
The meme is misleading for a number of reasons. It implies without proffering evidence that the outbreaks didn’t originate naturally, but rather were the result of some amorphous scheme to influence politics — though which country’s politics is never directly stated (perhaps the U.S.?), and the illnesses listed varied in virulence and severity, not to mention affected multiple countries at various times.

The meme is also misleading for a reason made obvious by the name of the coronavirus-caused disease, COVID-19: the number 19 signifies the year 2019, when that virus was first detected, not 2020 as the meme implies.

Indeed, the meme gets a number of years wrong in regard to when the illnesses were first detected globally. For example, the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) didn’t happen in 2004, the year U.S. President George W. Bush was reelected. SARS was first reported in February 2003, which was not a presidential election year, and was deemed contained in the U.S. by May 2003. Similarly, swine flu was declared a pandemic"

in the spring of 2009, not 2010, which was a midterm election year in the United States.

Furthermore, it’s unclear what the term “election year” means. Again assuming the meme is addressing the U.S., some of the years listed were presidential election years, while others were midterm election years. But elections are held at every level of government every year, if one takes into account special elections and state and local elections.

And, much like COVID-19, the Zika virus started late in the year leading up to an election year and bled over into it. Zika cases were initially reported in 2015 (presidential election year of 2016), while the new coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan, China, in the winter of 2019 (presidential election year of 2020).

Conspiracy theories are usually half-baked; this one isn’t even ready to go in the oven."

Anyways there is no elections in China, Italy and the 90 other Countries dealing with the infection.

This is what worries me about the virus spreading here. It's perfectly normal for Americans to show up for work sick, because it's so expensive to go to the doctor (if we even have insurance or not). A lot of us won't even get checked or take time off when we get the virus, because we won't know we have it. Our awful healthcare situation could bite us hard.

If you get a mild case of it is it like the cold where you can get it again in months?

A review of the data shows a "mild" case ranges from fever 100.4 F and above to Pneumonia. That's the definition of "Mild" case.

Do people who have recovered from novel coronavirus become immune to it?

It's too early to know for sure. But other coronaviruses, like ones that cause the common cold, might give us clues.

With "common cold coronaviruses, you don't actually have immunity that lasts for very long, and so we don't know the answer with this specific coronavirus," said Dr. Celine Gounder, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at the New York University School of Medicine.

"If you recover, are you immune? And if you are immune, how long does that last? And that's actually going to be one of the challenges with designing a vaccine is how do you actually cause the immunity to last long enough to protect you."

The surge of cases in Italy is odd. Unless other EU states arent being that transparent, the numbers are so crazy its insane.

Italy nearly 10k cases and nearly 500 deaths.
Germany, france ans Spain combined 3300 cases

Such an alarming spread in Italy.

Doctor friend has been on hold with the CDC for 30 mins. Patient with obvious signs, recent travel to Seattle

This has been the most bullshit response by our government you could ever draw up.

The current administration fired the entire pandemic chain of command back in 2018. Probably cause Obama had set it up specifically for the Ebola outbreak, pressured congress to re-assign Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer and his team within that and then moved on someone else in another department. Ronald Klain who was the czar before it all got dismantled has been shouting from the rooftops since it's dissolution that the US is fucked if a pandemic comes about.

You guys will soon be seeing if Ronald Klain was right or wrong.

Italy has an aged population compared to a lot of other countries and high rate of smoking both of these are thought to increase the likelihood of death (being old and smoking). They're also testing like mad.
