Cormier vs. Henderson - how does their wrestling match up ...

It will look like a more lopsided version of Shad/Hendo. Hendo won't be able to get off the fence/off his back once he gets tired and Cormier will ride out an easy decision win.

Dan was never taken down against Rashad.

Cormier is the better MMA wrestler and he is a bit more credentialled in amateur wrestling as well. Cormier was a much much better folkstyler than Hendo and probably a little bit better than Hendo in senior level wrestling, albeit in different styles. Hendo was a 2X Olympian but never medaled at the worlds/olympics. DC competed in 1 Olympics and qualified for another that his weight cut/kidneys never allowed him to compete in. DC scored a bronze at the worlds which is very impressive. Hendo medaled at some world cups and pan am games but I dont know if he won any of them. He did beat the Cuban world champ though which is big. Both Hendo and DC were extremely successfull domestically in their respective form of wrestling with each winning numerous national titles and trials.

Internationally with FILA sponsored events, here you go...

DC will own Hendo in when they grapple. I'd really like to see Dan win by knock out.

I would venture to say DC is better at Greco than Hendo but he chose to compete in freestyle because its more prestigious and has a deeper talent pool. Having said that I don't like this fight, huge fan of both but Hendo is my all time favorite fighter and I really do not give him a chance in this fight.

Not once did that man say that Shad took down Hendo. He said it would be more lop-sided then it.

Derp white knight.

How is something going to be a more lopsided version of something else if that what is claimed to take place in the latter event did not occur in the former? that's not a more lopsided version, that's a totally different occurrence.

What makes u even contemplate that? Dans Greco resume is insanely good. The only thing DC accomplished of note in Greco is a bronze at the cadet worlds. I posted about it in this thread.

If you are elite at freestyle there's a good chance you would be elite at Greco if one pursued it.

Cormier may try to prove that he is legend and stand toe to toe with Dan. If he does, Dan by ko easy. Cormier needs to fight smart and take him down and grind him down.

Well, Cormier outstruck Roy Nelson easily...and Nelson/Hendo basically have the same one-trick pony striking game. I think Cormier will mix up wrestling and striking, but as long as he doesn't stand in the pocket like Bop Em' Sock Em' toy, he should be fine. He has the footwork, speed and head movement to avoid Dan's telegraphed power shots.

Cormier has never been taken down in MMA. Not even by big HWs like Barnett and Bigfoot, who both tried. Hendo has been taken down by plenty of smaller and less credentialed guys: both Rua brothers, Jake Shields, Palhares, Machida and many more. In fact, Machida took Dan down from the clinch.

Moreoever, Cormier's Olympic wrestling days occurred in this century, not the early-to-mid 1990s like Hendo's.

Ol hendos only hope is that hbomb of a right connecting. Cormier has him in ever facet of the game

Dan has kinda bailed on his wrestling in favor of throwing h bombs. Jake shields out wrestled him at 185. 10-15 years ago maybe dans wrestling would match up well but I think as he gets older he's more inclined to box and throw an occasional awkward kick.

Cmon, this fight is a total mismatch. Cormier dominates every aspect of the fight with Hendos only chance being pure luck. He also hasn't been a good MMA wrestler for the vast majority of his career, having been taken down by tons of fighters throughout his career with ease.

I don't think landing a bomb would be luck since he's done it plenty of times, but you are right about Dan getting taken down a lot in his career. People seem to forget that.

DC was good at greco as a High Schooler but Dan was our best greco guy for like 5 years or a little more. As for your statement that being good at freestyle=being good at greco, if you were talking about the vast majority of guys that is just not true. The opposite is more true, if you are good at greco chances are u can be good at freestyle. But freestyle guys are so damn reliant on leg attacks and trips, u take those away and they are lost. If you look at the 2012 Olympic greco team there were more greco specialists and former football players than freestyle converts. However, having said all that, your statement may hold true in Cormier's case. He had the perfect body type for greco and was very good at pulling off high amplitude throws while in freestyle, plus like I said he started his international career in greco.

Il certainly agree DC is a better MMA wrestler and a better overall fighter, but there is no way anyone can say DC is/was better at greco than Dan was which is what Phillipe was saying.
