We'll go into specifics on performance in due course, but suffice to say, IO's gambit pays off as all three systems barely waver from a 60fps lock from start to finish, but how they deliver this varies according to the host system...

Beyond that, the visual feature set of Hitman 3 is broadly consistent across all three next-gen machines with just some minor changes...

Meanwhile, there are additional tweaks to shadow quality too. Series S uses the equivalent to PC's low quality shadows (in common with the last-gen base console renditions of Hitman 3), while PlayStation 5 runs at medium (similar to One X and PS4 Pro) and Xbox Series X operates at high.

All of which leads us to the topic of performance, where IO interactive has done an excellent job in delivering Agent 47's latest missions with a nigh-on faultless 60 frames per second from start to finish, regardless of whether you're gaming on Xbox or PlayStation. Hitman 3 does allow you to sample every mission right from the get-go and so we've been able to test the title across the length and breadth of its content.

Put simply, it's 60 frames per second... with just one exception in our hours of play. In the Mendoza mission set in Argentina, it is possible to see Xbox consoles run between 50 to 60fps around a field towards the outskirts of the level, while PlayStation 5 remains constant at 60fps.

One will suffer tear-free 50+ fps drops while crouch-running through two patches of flowers on the outskirts of one level.

I guess when one's a fanboy jocking an inferior piece of hardware one settles for whatever consolations he can find to avoid confronting the fact he'll play a 44% inferior resolution with lower graphical settings and no VRS throughout the entire game.

Tools are starting to come up to speed on the series x, after early issues.. which obviously was predicted to be the case months ago.

Well I put in an order today for a Series X directly from Microsoft’s Canadian website as they went back in stock this afternoon. As I already have a PS5, on a go forward basis I will just wait for reviews to see which version of games are better on each platform. Of course there’s also the consideration of what games will be on Gamepass and which will be console exclusives etc.

In any event, the way I see it I don’t need to worry about the console wars this generation as I’ll just have both.

I’ll probably wait but not quite as long as I did last gen. See if there’s a mid cycle refresh for Xbox and go with that. By then there should be a decent library and I’ll have a place to play my third party games.

The Xbox was kind of a dumb impulse buy on my part, but I figured maybe I’ll try to sell my One S and get as much as I can for it now before Series S/X become more prevalent and I won’t even be able to give the One away.

Got a PS5 but assuming Microsoft starts dropping some big hits on game pass i can still totally see myself getting an Xbox. Heard they're testing the waters about making their own controller with dualsense like features.

I'm more annoyed at the fact that new gamers got three months of Ultimate for a quid, whilst offering loyal subscribers nothing on return.

I bought three months worth of Gold instead, because I didn't have the option for a year.

So I just got a text message from my wife (who’s been working from home since covid) asking if I ordered an Xbox. I cannot figure out how she would know. I ordered it using my hotmail email account which I’ve barely used in like 18 years. The anticipated delivery date was supposed to be February 2nd, and I only ordered it on Wednesday. It couldn’t have already arrived, could it? If so, I’m fucked.

Edit: just checked FedEx, it was delivered to my house an hour ago. D’oh! Who the hell ever heard about a delivery being 11 days early? No idea how to explain this to the waifu.

Of course it is. Doubling the price on Gold it no longer makes sense to have just that. Might as well spend the extra $5 to get Ultimate. Scummy as hell.
