<<Console Wars>> PS5 vs. XSX

I've heard this before. The Xbox has untapped potential beyond anything on Playstation. And then 7 years go by with nothing to show for it.
What are you talking about? The PS3 was more powerful than the 360 at launch and the PS4 was more powerful than the XB1 at launch.

Really? Ok, hmm. Must be remembering wrong. Feels like Xbox selling point has always been more powerful hardware.

OG Xbox was more powerful than PS2.
Yeah im digging back into some history on it. I knew the PS3/360 era was probably a different story because the PS3 was a bit of an enigma. But I could have sworn the One was more powerful than the PS4, or at least touted as such.

Nah, not only was the PS4 more powerful than XB1 but XB1 was even further limited by the Kinect reserving some cpu/memory.... The excuse for the XB1 then was "the cloud" would do the cpu work to make the difference lol

They didn't get more powerful until they released the One X over the PS4 Pro

The PS3 was notoriously difficult to program for despite being more powerful so 360 multiplat titles usually performed and looked better.

And ultimately the difference between the two will be negligible. Xbox was hyped as the power machine. It’s going to come down to games, as it always has.
And always will. One doesn't play or experience honour, heartache, and humour with specs. We do so with stories, with chars. To say, great stories -- and memorable chars. Whatever platform anyone runs, home will be where offered journeys stay in mind and memory.

This is sad to see. PS5 looking mighty tasty right about now. Still going to wait for the next batch of them. Pick one up next Xmas, though I want demon souls real fucking bad right now.

If you need a 500% zoomed in side by side comparison of jaggies to see the difference, who cares....

Same with the 1 second difference in loading times.

That's a major difference, and not just in jaggies/anti-aliasing. The textures are completely dead in the XSX version.

I'm sure it'll be fixed, though.

The first round of systems always has problems. They are usually being rushed, and manufacturing plants are usually still learning the best way to actually make them. It's why I like to wait 6 months before I buy a console, but man I'm hankering for a PS5 bad.
and to think people are paying scalpers over $1000 for these things.

Sony executive doesn’t sound optimistic about delivering supply to meet the demand..

COD Black Ops Cold War Comparison.

both are generally stable but Xbox Series X performs a lot better with RT on. Without RT on PS5 has the edge...

They seem pretty much neck and neck. Like those frame drops dont happen during gameplay...

I want to play the single player campaign, I just dont want to pay the full amount since I dont like the MP portion of the game. Modern Warfare is just so much better.

It was not neck and neck. The PS5 was dropping to the low 40's in the frames they showed while the XSX stayed glued at 60fps with RTS on in sequences they showed. Nevertheless, as with most games, these problematic sequences compose a minority of overall gameplay (around 5% or so of the game).
How on earth are the textures that much better on the PS5? Arent 3rd party games meant to be performing better on the XSX? Its like nearly every new game is performing better on the PS5 in general.

Cerny did say that they designed the PS5 with the intention of making it easier to develop for. Makes sense they can push the console harder from the get go. I can only imagine how good games will look 4-5 years down the line.
It won't take 4-5 years for consoles. The XSX is already outperforming the PS5 in several multiplat games, at least, I haven't reviewed analysis of dozens, if there is, and specifically when discussing major differences, like res/framerate target differences, the presence of optional framerate modes, or completely new graphical features like ray-tracing, VRS, mesh shaders, etc. The PS5 only seems to enjoy an advantage that will be patched away. You're thinking of PC where developer-side care for stuff like APIs is sluggish (ex. DX12/Vulkan support). "It's easier to develop for the PS5" because it's always easier to develop for something that doesn't add anything new. It's easier to develop for the PS4 and Xbox than new GPUs on the PC, for example.

The primary analysis they're not offering, since DRS now rules the world, is the average resolution on each system, or the total time spent at x resolution at various levels (ex. 1080p, 1200p, 1440p, 1600p, 1800p, 2160p). The recent spate of multiplat games performing so closely has been surprising, given the raw advantage for the Xbox with nearly identical hardware; however not too surprising, as Rich pointed out it's easier for developers in the blitz to prepare for the big launch to just run the same mode on both machines, setting this baseline lower to satisfying what the PS5 can handle, with the possibility (not the guarantee) that they will optimize the overhead the XSX enjoys given more time.

Meanwhile, sometimes adding new tools (within a coherent strategy) has its benefits:

PS5 backwards compatibility just gave Xbox Series X a big win
Don't hold your breath for 120 fps PS4 games on PS5
While both consoles are capable of playing last-gen games at higher frame rates than ever before, it seems that developers are only unlocking the potential for the Xbox Series X version. Last week Activision patched in 120 frames per second support for Call of Duty: Warzone on Xbox Series X, but not PS5 – and now Rocket League gets the same treatment.

Eurogamer has a good idea of why. While Activision wouldn't comment, Rocket League developer Psyonix was a lot more candid. It seems that the process is far simpler on Microsoft’s hardware than it is on Sony’s, and for Psyonix the extra hurdles involved mean it’s not viable at the moment.

“Our team's main focus this year was our recent free to play transition and updating major features like our Tournaments system,” the company said. “Due to this we had to make tough decisions on what else we could achieve. Enabling 120hz on Xbox Series X|S is a minor patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full native port due to how backwards compatibility is implemented on the console, and unfortunately wasn't possible due to our focus elsewhere.”
