<<Console Wars>> PS5 vs. XSX

That's insane. The highest I remember PS2s getting back when they launched was $800 (which is about $1210 in 2020 money).

And......Valhalla has already been patched:
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be able to run at 60fps on all next-gen consoles with new update

It runs at 60fps with a "dynamic resolution" on the Xbox Series S, now, too.

GAME IMPROVEMENTS

  • (PC) Addressed a VRAM/RAM leakage issue when alt tabbing to desktop.

Seriously ?
Developer choice. They could nerf the graphical detail to reap higher resolutions, and tolerate more framerate drops, but these are incredibly demanding games from Ubisoft:
What this basically means is that the only platform that can run these games in native 4K is the PC. And, to be honest, this does not really surprise us. As we’ve already reported, Watch Dogs Legion is quite demanding in native 4K. In 4K/Ultra with Ray Tracing Medium, our RTX2080Ti cannot even come hit 30fps.
Only the RTX 3090 will be likely to hit 4K@60fps native in Legion or Valhalla at these settings.

So this generation......no 4K / 60 fps + RT possible, even years from now ? Especially heavily detailed / densely populated with intelligent AI games ?

Going from 1080p straight to 4k was just so dumb. 1440p has been the sweet spot for years and would suit the new consoles perfectly too.

But everyone wanted to be the first to write 4k on their box and now there is no turning back....

no 4K / 60 fps + RT possible
Thats not necessarily true.

Maybe not native 4k at that fps with RT, but there have been ways of upscaling a lower resolution image with those features to 4k. Miles, iirc, is one of those games.

But a report from The Verge claims that this could be down to development kits of the Xbox Series X. According to the publication's development sources, dev kits for Microsoft's more powerful next-gen console arrived later than that of the PS5, so developers had less time to adapt to and plan around the Xbox Series X.

"We are aware of performance issues in a handful of optimized titles on Xbox Series X|S and are actively working with our partners to identify and resolve the issues to ensure an optimal experience," a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge. "As we begin a new console generation, our partners are just now scratching the surface of what next-gen consoles can do and minor bug fixes are expected as they learn how to take full advantage of our new platform."

There's good news on the horizon at least, as Microsoft commits to working with development partners to address the issues raised in the Digital Foundry video. Microsoft rounded out by saying "we are eager to continue working with developers to further explore the capability of Xbox Series X|S in the future."

Pretty much identical. PS5 loads nearly 10 seconds faster though.

So now we have to ask, which multiplat games does the XSX perform better in? It seems like every new game multiplat game has the edge on the PS5......

Starting to see why everything was about backwards compatibility and game pass.

Lol at dev kits as an excuse, don’t beat your chest for months on end about the worlds most powerful console then.

Over promised and under delivered, they were borderline obnoxious and it’s pretty funny.

To the best of my knowledge, there isnt a game thats out and out better performing on the XSX. I think nearly all third party titles have modes that run better on the PS5 and some modes that run better on the XSX. Outside of Dirt 5, I dont think any third party games performs way better on either console.

Thats good for the consumer.

oh wow it’s pretty much like it’s always been and will be lol

XSX wins a strong majority of loading comparisons. It is also the only console that actually supports an outright higher resolution for a multiplat game (Star Wars Squadrons). This was similar to the advantage the PS5 held over the XB1 at launch with 1080p modes rather than 900p. Then there is Rocket League. There is also the latest Call of Duty game where the XSX wins the optimal graphics mode due to more ray-tracing "intersection hardware-accelerated" cores.

The fact developers are taking longer to adapt to the more advanced dev kit in the Xbox is the most logical explanation for the games where it tends to suffer framerate dips, as the puzzlement of the DF commenters themselves conveys, and that is reinforced by the fact it took less than a week to patch Valhalla to close the performance gap in that particular game (according to Ubisoft themselves). Another example is Dirt 5. Their own developer has confirmed it was a development issue by them resulting in the XSX's underperformance. Separately, DF themselves already speculated the texture filter discrepancy was likely due to a bug:

At the end of the day, hardware is hardware, and the XSX is ~30% superior using nearly identical hardware pipelining on identical architecture (Zen 2 & RDNA 2.0). Never has a lesser GPU or CPU in this situation outperformed a greater counterpart once drivers and game patches matured.
