<<Console Wars>> PS5 vs. XSX

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/...legendary-edition-tested-on-next-gen-consoles

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition has identical graphics on PS5, XSX, and here's the kicker: XSS.

The only difference? The PS5 and Xbox Series S are limited to 1440p@60fps in performance mode. The XSX doubles this at 1440p@120fps.

For some unexplained reason, it's also more bloated on the PS5: 101GB install size versus 88GB on the XSX.

It's even bigger on Steam at 120gb. The day one patch alone was around 13gb from what I gather also.

Nightmarish sizes. Still, that at least might make sense if the PC edition has differences the 9th-gen console versions don't. It has to accommodate a lot more machines, after all. It looks to be the same size on EA Play Pro.

I think “war” is being used very loosely at this point.

A Hasbeen developer realising its masterpiece on next gen consoles without utilising the power of those consoles and following the backs of multiple flops?

Colour me surprised.

This. BioWare never gets another dime from me. Never had any intention of playing MEA or Anthem. I knew they were going to suck both times.

It’s not a PS5 or XSX/XSS title though, that’s the problem, it’s a PS4/Xbone game running on backwards compatibility on next gen, that’s all, that’s why there’s nothing all that amazing done to these, although even if they were made for PS5/XSX I’m not sure what else they could really do while keeping it a remaster as opposed to a remake.

Jesus Christ. At those sizes this went from probably a pass to a hard pass. I’ve still got my 360 discs for the trilogy, I’ll just play those on my Series X.

Fair enough, I understand that but that doesnt explain the difference in sizes between the XSX/PC and PS5. If anything it seems like they spent more time optimising for the XSX [maybe an underlying deal with MS?], so Im sure there were tweaks done to use the next gen hardware, but to me, its been poorly done by a hasbeen developer.

It's probably because the XSX's toolset is superior for porting older titles. Developers have mentioned it makes this much easier, and wouldn't even bother updating PS5 titles, which is why the backwards compatibility enhancements are so much more robust on the XSX.

I'm not too worried about getting a PS5 or XBOX4 anytime soon. I'm older now and can look at things objectively.. The slight improvements over the PS4 and XBOX3 don't impress me as much as it does you folks. I've looked at side by side video comparisons and in some games, there really isn't much of a difference if at all but I'm sure you guys were amazed and completely blown away... I reckon you guys can readily notice the few extra pixels and extra shadows or wrinkles here and there. Maybe I need glasses..

For me the deciding factor will be the controller. That's it. If Sony doesn't make their controllers bigger and thicker, I'm going with XBOX. I haven't held either controller yet. Only seen them in pics or videos. I'm also not worried about getting one of the new consoles until I see them for sale for like $200.. I can wait until slim models are released..

I'm currently playing Darksiders and Need for Speed. I'm in the last castle on Darksiders I believe. I've enjoyed both games

The current generation and last generation of consoles seems like they relied on remastered titles. That's not too impressive to me.. They just take old popular games, spruce up the graphics a little bit, add some new DLC, and people go nuts.. It's going to take more than that to impress me... GTA5 is still GTA5.. Grand Turismo 6 is still Grand Turismo 6.. Dark Souls is still Dark Souls.. IDGAF...

This is the type of shit I'm talking about.. Did we really need the PS5?

Dumb question. You wont see the differences through a YT video with so much compression, let alone the extras. The RT, 3D audio, instant load times, 4k at higher FPS, higher res textures, so on and so on make the PS5 superior. Its actually superior to the PC in a few aspects aswell.

But I guess people without a PS5 need to pretend that their PS4 is good enough. Its okay dude, you'll find one soon enough. :D

I've been a console guy my whole life, only dabbling into PC gaming here and there. So the whole higher frame rate argument of PC vs. Console didn't really interest me because I really didn't have a frame of reference to compare to, so I was happy as a clam with the 30fps I was getting from my consoles. I can honestly say that after getting a decent gaming laptop and the new gen consoles and playing at the higher frame rates has made a huge difference. My kids got my hand me down XB1's, and when I go and play with them I'm just thinking to myself, "How can you guys even play on these?!?". It was all well and good when that was my only reference, but the higher frame rates on PS5/XBX and PC makes it really hard to look back.

As for the controller, the PS Dual Sense is truly next gen, where the XB just feels more of the same, which isn't bad because the XB has a great controller. Everyone that I have talked to about it says pretty much the same thing that the Haptics are hard to describe until you try it, but it just adds another level of emersion into the game. If you have an opportunity to get your hands on one at like BestBuy or something, you'll see what I'm talking about. It all boils down to comfort though, so I totally get it just not feeling good. My favorite controller for the longest time was the 360 controller. The PS Dual Shock 1-3 all felt small and like toys to me. The Dual Shock 4 took over with the changes they made, and the XBOne took a small step back for me. They changed their configuration just a hair and it was uncomfortable for me to hit the bumpers. Not a huge change, but noticeable enough for me on any extended play sessions. The new Dual Sense is noticeably large than the DS4, and I think it feels great. I've talked to others that think it's to large, but it's all preference.

You can't even buy a PS4 Slim brand new for that price right NOW.

You can not be worried and wait for another 7 or 8 years or so i guess. LOLOLOLOL!

Superior to the PC how?

The 3D audio. The load times also seem quicker on the PS5 and I have a pretty decently fast SSD. RE8 fades to black then boom youre in for the PS5, but there is a loading screen and a button you have to press for the PC. The sense of immersion you get with the dualsense, 3D audio and the better HDR [in my case], makes the PS5 superior in those ways.

But the PC, graphics, FOV mod, vignette removal, the crisper controls, etc are better.

Well that would depend on the PC. I daresay a good amount of gaming rigs out there aren't pushing what the PS5 is capable of doing IMO. I know my old rig wasn't. Another point is the games (especially the exculsives) are built and optimized for the PS5. The Haptic feedback on the controller is top notch. I have a 3090 PC and i am waivering between buying games on PC or PS5 now. Returnal has completely changed the way i think about my PS5. Keyboard + Mouse is superior to a console controller but I am finding myself truly immersed with Returnal. It's that DAMN good IMO.

1) The Tempest Audio Engine is accelerated by hardware, but there are 3D audio engines on PC with vastly superior discrete hardware solutions

2) The load times are objectively not quicker on the PS5 outside a tiny few outliers, and that's true even if using a PCIe Gen3 SSD like the Samsung 970 EVO. It loses the majority of head-to-heads so far assessed in this thread to the XSX, in fact.

3) HDR on the PS5 is inferior to the PC and the XSX. It's sporting the lowest standards. It is neither HDR10+ or Dolby Vision capable.

Amazing. Everything you just said managed to be wrong.
