This kinds of cases, especially with his history and the many other similar incidents, alleged or otherwise it doesn't matter, are best put to sleep as soon as possible. The public has a relatively short memory, so the best PR strategy is usually to just close it quickly. The more he acts enraged, then apologetic, then belligerent, then appeals, then is sorry, then ... he's just keeping it "alive" and he's never going to win on the image front: his behaviour - criminal or consensual - was just not acceptable to most, and it corroborated the many other bad allegations and rumored incidents.
He should have settled out of court no matter the cost; deciding to go to court on the strength of his friends testifying in his favor was the first mistake, as he had to officialise his despicable conduct which now isn't gossip, it's official statements. The next mistake will be to try and appeal, giving it even more resonance: the judgement won't be overturned, and even if by some miracle it is, no one will care from a PR perspective.
Clearly he's not the brightest, but those advising him are not managing the situation in the least damaging way long term.
Anyway, he is only getting the result of his behaviors, so it's deserved karma.
