Concerns for Volk as Champ Again, Should He Retire on Top?

He needs to take as many fights as quickly as possible. He managed to get the belt back. Now he needs to fill his pockets because he doesn't have much time left.

I think he needs to think about legacy and be smart and try and get the easiest possible title defense and then retire on a win.

His pockets are already pretty full. Dude would have millions by now. He's had a few main events as champ so would have been getting those PPV points.

he couldnt see because he got punched in the fucking eyeball

are people this stupid?

This is truth.

And it reminds me of the time I was finishing a bag of Doritos -- I was going after the crumbs and lifted the bag when a Dorito shard tumbled out and hit me in the eye. I couldn't see for about a minute as I scrambled to get that Dorito out of my eye area.

But I didn't panic like Volk seemed to.

Legacy is completely useless.

Legacy for what, to feel good when thinking about it? For schmucks to debate about on online forums? Something for people to remember when you're dead?

He can't even control what people will say about his legacy.

His pockets might be full, but he has a chance to make them even fuller now that he managed to grab the belt again.

Even if he stops fighting he's going to look for any avenue he can to make the most amount of money anyways and right now he has a great opportunity to make a ton of money in the UFC.

Volk can probably get a few more defenses with topuria gone.

There's a group of peeps that think he won the first Islam fight. Taking that into consideration, they could have a solid argument for Volk being FW GOAT.

And every GOAT candidate has their loss.

He also has a strong fan base. He's one of the ones who have already made a lot of money and likely will continue to after.

I saw the Makachev fight once but I remember having it 48-47 Islam.

Everyone in the real world knows Volk is a paper champ.

It’s just the Sherdog echo chamber filled with underachieving beta males that glaze “nice guys” like Volk despite the fact that he’s stalled the division and other guys careers with his endless supply of title shots.

Don’t get me wrong, I was a fan of Volks style when he was styling on guys like Max without getting touched but now he’s just a mediocre point fighter getting rocked almost every round doing the bare minimum to win on points. Not very fan friendly to those who don’t buy into half assed cringe storylines.

Topuria is the champ, FW has lost its prestige, that’s about it right now.
Why is volk the bad guy because top decided not to defend his belt anymore?
And he was landing finishing shots on Diego, Lopes just has a ridiculous chin.

I don't really like Volk but he needs a long vacation and needs to seriously contemplate if it's still worth it. He's got nothing left to prove. It would be cool to walk out on top.

But...

There's reasons why we rarely see fighters go out on top. Too competitive, too poor, or sometimes they just don't know anything else other than training and fighting. I don't know enough about Volk to guess where he falls but it feels like the competitive type who will belive in himself to a detramint.

I agree with most of what you’re saying but again it lack some context: let’s not act like Diego Lopes didnt make that fight exciting by relentlessly chasing Volk all night having no respect for his punches. Volk was just smart and used it to accumulate points with volume by tapping low kicks and jabs while Diego came forward.

I scored the fight for Volk, but I was not impressed. That was Diego clearly lacking 5 round and title fight experience. He went in overzealous to KO Volk. Good mentality to have but he didn’t adjust.

The only thing I give Volk credit for is not getting KO’d but he went in there with a point fighting mentality with his team begging him to stall the fight with takedown attempts/wall n stall.

That being said, I’m surprised actual Volk fans aren’t concerned with him getting put on skates almost every round now. He’s literally losing recollection of rounds asking his corner to fill him in on events almost every round…. That’s not a good sign. As a fan of the sport who’s brutally honest, I’m thinking he should call it a career. He did not look good.

He wouldn’t do any better against Topuria and guys like Silva are way too fast and athletic for him at this point. They’re also too well versed on the mat to even consider his antiquated grappling a threat anymore.

What? Volk went in there as the hammer in round one. Stood in the pocket and traded and rocked lopes, bullied him in the clinch with knees and hard clinch strikes, tossed him to the ground and bounced lopes head off the mats with gnp. It was only after Lopes landed clean in the last ten seconds of round 2 that volk switched to a more conservative point fighting approach, and even in those rounds he was popping lopes' head back likes pez dispenser.

No. Movsar is a free title defense for Volk. After him, who is there?

Volk didn’t win that fight because of his power punches. He won that fight racking up leg kicks and jabs while Lopes aimlessly chased him around the octagon.

It was the right play on Volks side, and I thought he clearly won on the 10 point scoring system, but he was harmless for the most part. It’s no secret that he went in there looking for a decision and he did just that.

All I’m saying is that Volk is a neutered version of himself, him getting rocked almost every round since he’s been KO’d is not a good look. He’s not what he was and clearly isn’t the top guy anymore. He needs to hang them up if this is how his fights are gonna keep playing out.

Lopes is fine and will get better with championship experience, Volks chin is not gonna get any better.

Retiring on top would be best for his career. I just think he is like Ferguson. They love having fans chanting their name and it makes them feel alive.
