Comic Book Discussion Thread V.17 (R.I.P. Sal Buscema)

Yeah, that was one of the worst things they've ever done. The books they came out with after that were some of the best, but it had nothing to do with taking out the MJ/ Parker relationship.

Like Spider -Island and stuff? I liked Big Time too, but like you said, the marriage was no part of that, he could have easily remained married during that stuff. It would've made the stories even better IMO.

I bought the Planetary Omnibus vol 1 and 2. (Omnibuses?)

I read most of the books in volume 1 while I was still collecting. What a great series!

Warren Ellis is a favorite writer of mine. He can write himself into a corner sometimes, but he is usually "on," and he spins a great tale. I really enjoyed his run on Stormwatch/the Authority, too.

The new venom is sick
Brave and the bold has been fucking awesome. Batman & WW in the norse mythology realm

I didn't read a lot of DC unless you count DC's acquisition of Wildstorm and Vertigo. One thing the era did well was put the writer at the forefront. I grew up in the 90s era when the artists sold books, but I like the 2000's era more across the board. Even Image made Kirkman a partner. And having a writer/artist team for an entire run. I really dislike when artists are always switching out on runs. It's like actors switching out in the middle of a movie.

the only people who don't like Joe Q are the old grumpy comic fans who want to see the same thing 70 straight years In a row.

For the most part I hate comic book fans. They're complete assholes. Nerds are assholes, people fail to realize this.

It's like the people who hate Brian Bendis. The people who hate him viciously hate him. They say he sucks and he's a hack and was always awful. THey forget to mention he was the number one writer in comics for a decade and sold million and millions of titles. Not everything was a home run but the majority of his stuff was great. People hate joe q because he brought in Bendis and gave him the creative control over the comic line.

Marvel was never better imo

Planetary is my favorite series of all time. Imo it's the best series of all time.

I don't really hang around hardcore comics people so I never met anyone that hates Bendis passionately. I do know an internet Mark Millar hater called @Secret Agent

Love Millar. Love his authority. Ultimates etc etc etc

Guys like Morrison, Millar, Ellis, Bendis all got me back into comics. Then writers like Rucka, Brubaker, Fraction, Remmender, Aaron,Hickman, Gillen kept me reading them.

Hands down Marvels greatest era

what are some good recent Marvel comics should i read. right now im reading Infinity countdown and Avengers no surrender

Planetary is my favorite series of all time. Imo it's the best series of all time.

It is definitely top-tier for me. I love when writers pay homage to pulp fiction heroes, fiction heroes, and, of course, comic book super heroes. It keeps you on your toes and MAY make you read some of the work on the originals.

Alan Moore did a similar thing with 19th century fiction in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I really enjoyed that title as well, but I think Ellis trumped Moore with Planetary.

I'm actually re-reading Planetary again. So many little details to pick up on!

Premise was great but couldn't follow through with it. Overall: C+

I read all of Peter David's Hulk run. The stories were really good, but the art was either crappy (MacFarlane, Purves, Sharp), very good (Dale Keown), or excellent (Gary Frank).

Keown has a lot of John Byrne in his anatomy. Since Byrne is a personal favorite of mine, I like that. Keown definitely has his own style, but his foundation seems to be Byrne.

Gary Frank, especially when inked by Cam Smith, was as close to the ideal Hulk artist as there has ever been, IMHO.

I read the Squadrom Supreme. So many say it was a seminal book. I basically hated it. The art sucked, except for the single issue laid out by John Buscema. The writing was terrible. Terrible. Everyone had at least one stupid nickname, and Hyperion had several. It was like it was written for an 8 year old. The end was sudden, and seemed to be rushed. I know Mark Gruenwald, the writer, was a beloved editor, and he died of cancer not long after Squadron was published. Still... Yuck.

I used to be really into comics although admittedly I've lost some of my enthusiasm over the past couple of years. Rick Remender's Venom has to be one of my favourite runs ever; it has a ton of well-structured fight scenes, a good mix of original villains along with some more established ones and interesting character development. Jeff Lemire's Green Arrow was really good too, he took a title that was average at best and turned it into a series that easily rivalled the Batman comics. He was able to revitalise the Justice League Dark title too, the guy has to be one of my top writers. The Strange Talent of Luther Strode is something I'd recommended to anyone who wants to get away from the Big Two Comics, it's a fun read and has some brutal artwork throughout the whole series. Although I never read all 70-something issues, the Sandman series is another favourite of mine and is definitely different to anything else I've read.

kinda seems like that was directed at me. I stated twice I respect what Quesada did, he had a couple of fantastic series, but I just said I'll never forgive him for OMD.

Just finished Hawkeye: Kate Bishop vol 2. Really good story. Think I'll start on Ultimates 2. I still can't believe they killed off the Tribunal.
