Their cries about freedom of speech and open debate aren't genuine, they're happy to wield state power and social capital to silence progressives as evidenced by their support of China doing so. The thing is that right wingers no longer have the social capital to suppress progressives the way they once did and now that the shoe is on the other foot they are appealing to the free speech but its not a sincere, principled appeal from most of them. Of course there are exceptions but for the most part they are happy to suppress progressives at the first opportunity even if they're crying from the rooftops about free speech right up until that point.

The right keeps screeching about freedom of speech on a private platform. If you truly support freedom of speech for all on a private platform, you should be in support of groups like NAMBLA being able to post what they want as well. Xi Jinping actually has a great grip on the Chinese people than Mao - If by "grip" you mean control.

One of the great revelations of the Cultural Revolution was that Mao plunged his country into chaos on purpose in order to be the strongest man. This, by the way, was the beginning of economic reform. Yes, capitalism existed in the early 70s in China while Mao was still alive, because he lost control of the country so that his rivals would die. I don't expect Xi to ever lose control in that way.
