Chess - Path towards World Chess Championship (Gukesh Dommaraju vs Ding Liren)

I have no doubt you'd utilize various strategies from The Art of the Draw to stalemate Magnus with hilarious ease.

{<redford}

i would let him promote his 6'th queen and that is when i would strike for the draw.

though in all honesty all those guys would whoop my ass before i could even set up a proper attack. i know a couple tricks but professionals are like 10 generations ahead of me. after i take the candy they're gonna bring out the juicer, hop in the pony, sacrifice their fatty queen, and then fry my chicken.

The arguments for Kasparov are typically centered around longevity and accomplishments. Not many people still believe at this point that Kasparov would beat Magnus at their peaks. Funnily, Magnus did a lie detector video where he was asked who the GOAT is. He said Kasparov and it was deemed a lie. It's always more out of respect for what Garry contributed to the game and how long he was at the top. Deep down, most people know Magnus is the best player ever. I watched Kasparov play and definitely didn't think someone would come along this quickly and dethrone him. It might be hard for some people to let go (I'm not sure which Ben you're referring to but I assume it's Finegold).

Seems kind of unfair to compare the two since Magnus has the benefit of chess engines to hone himself as well the chance to study Kasparov's games.

is the goat defined by "fairness"? are lebrons acheivements lessened because he watched kobe and jordan play? or because he as access to better training and nutrition than they did?

magnus is undoubtedly a better player than kasparov. That and lifetime acheivement are the two things that most would define goat by. kasparov would possibly have been a better player if he was born 30 years later. but he wasnt and he isnt.

Comparing people across different generations is always difficult. Magnus' competition also has the same access to engines and history though which brings up the relevance of ELO and results relative to peers. However, that also has shortcomings when comparing different generations.

Magnus and Garry's styles are also so different. It's fitting that the only time they played was when Magnus was 13 and Garry was at the end of his competitive career, and it ended in a draw. There are arguments for both and I don't really bother with chess GOAT lists, which should also include Fischer, Capablanca etc. Some of Fischer's accomplishments were unbelievable and he had to deal with some extremely difficult conditions at the time.

Overall, in an absolute sense, I do think Magnus is the best player I've ever seen. He also has one of the most interesting and appealing styles of play that's difficult to prepare for, and he can face virtually any playing style. He has the ability and confidence to take anyone out of their prep/comfort zone and drag them into deep waters to drown them. He really has no weaknesses and his games are always genuinely interesting to watch.

LeBron plays in a vastly different league than what Jordan (and Kobe) played in. Additionally, the majority of people that played with both MJ and LeBron say that MJ is a better basketball player whereas it's harder to find people that still think Kasparov had a higher peak than Carlsen.

Sports like hockey, basketball etc where the rules themselves have changed so drastically aren't a good comparison. They're almost completely different sports at this point. The rules of chess haven't changed. Ideally, one would take into account dominance relative to peers etc but who really cares. They were all amazing in their respective eras.

A reminder of the level of play that Ding can achieve. Game 6 of the 2023 world championship is one of the greatest mating sequences in world championship history imho.

The fact that Ding saw the sequence and executed it is unbelievable. He spent around 20 minutes to push his pawn to d5. It seems silly until you finally see the whole thing, which includes a queen sacrifice. Everyone was scratching their heads in real time trying to figure out what he was doing.

It's really unfortunate people are so focused on Ding's drop off that they struggle to appreciate the level of play he once achieved. He wasn't even at his best at this point in 2023 but he could still do stuff like this. Nepo was genuinely smiling when he resigned and shook hands.

well folks i had a hankering to play some more chess, but i didn't want to bring my account out of retirement after i threw up the bongcloud and made a glorious queen sacrifice that led me to victory in my last game, so i made a new account, barrie mckochiner - just to remind everybody what i did to their mothers last night.

in my latest adventure all was going well until i got my queen trapped between his rook and my king and it all went to shit after that. fotunately i was able to maintain my composure and salvage what i could out of the game.

not quite the 6 queen stack which is my endgame humiliation goal with this, but it was close enough.

art of the draw baby!

The 5 queen + 1 rook stalemate conversion is uncharted territory. You may need to devote a separate book to it.

magnus wouldn't fall for that kind of embarassment. the moment he promoted his 5'th queen he would have requested and pleaded for a draw.

Pragg wins Superbet Romania in a playoff. He continues to lead the FIDE Circuit.

This is legitimately hilarious.

Magnus vs Hikaru in the winners bracket finals at the chess.com classic.

Norway Chess going on right now. It's a very small and extremely strong field that is lucky to still have Magnus playing a classical tournament. The six players are Magnus, Hikaru, Fabi, Gukesh, Arjun, and Wei Yi.

So far it's been one of the best tournaments of the year. Gukesh has struggled this year, but there was a lot of hype surrounding Magnus vs Gukesh as world #1 vs world champion. Their first game opened the tournament. Both played extremely well, but Magnus capitalized on a mistake by Gukesh and executed as he usually does.

Their second game was today and Gukesh won after Magnus miscalculated badly and blundered a winning position.

Magnus was not too happy about it:

Gukesh and Fabi win again today. Magnus beats Hikaru in Armageddon and drops to third. Still three rounds to go and pretty wide open at the top.
