Law Cheers, Guv Gav for the happiness of California p******!

As opposed to your impeccable scholarly sources.
Probably the best peer reviewed scholarly article you will find in the last few years:

If the link doesn't work, it's called "State of the World’s Birds" published in 2022, in the journal Annual Review of Environment and Resources.

Basically it outlines that the top 4 causes of bird biodiversity loss across the world (ranked in order) are:

1) Resource industries (logging, hunting/trapping, fishing, etc.)
2) Agriculture (farming)
3) Climate Change
4) Invasive & problematic species (cats are here)

Yeah, fuck wild bird populations being decimated by domesticated cats. Great job California.

Are the birds also being de-winged in California or something?

Cause that seems like a problem with a pretty simple solution

This claim's always sounded credible yet confusing to me.

Growing up had a cat for 20 years who was outside every day in a wooded area without any other cats nearby at all. She'd catch and lovingly deliver mice, moles, chipmunks and rabbits and eff up the occasional garter snake.

Never once did she snag a bird. And there were a crazy amount of them with the birdfeeders going most of the year.

He's still doing the Trump style posts?? The content reads like it was written by Alex Jones' retarded brother ffs

I'm giving you peer reviewed scholarly articles. You're giving me an opinion piece by a cat advocacy group that uses numerous citations to put on the appearance of a scholarly article, but cites more sources against its hypothesis than for its hypothesis, and then just offers critiques of these sources and tries to pass that off as scholarship.

Look, I have little doubt that following cats around to estimate how many birds they are killing is a tall order, and that the data is messy. But same for the affects of pesticides or birds flying into windows. I teach on the third floor of my school, and have seen my share of birds hit the window. I've never had a researcher in a lab coat show up and write it down. But despite all of that, the overwhelming scientific consensus is that cats are the primary cause of population declines in song birds in North America.

I don't mind you holding the contrarian view on this, and I'm even willing to admit that the contrarian view might pan out to be the consensus view at some point in the future. It happens. But let's not go and pretend I'm the one who is putting forth the contrarian view in the moment. I simply presented the scientific consensus view, and some of you are acting like I'm presenting some sort of conspiratorial lunacy.
Could you briefly sum up the methodology(ies)?

Have domestic cats with free roaming (how much roaming is this per the studies roughly) increased commensurate to the bird pop decline increase? I'll have to look through this just looking for the gist.

Well if you're doing a Donald Trump impression you're not going to sound smart! lol.

Between my mother's and my sister's house, we've taken care of a ton of feral cats. Shout out to:

Hobo, Six Toes, Pepper, Momma, Benjamin, Samantha, Panther, Brave, Doof, Big, Benjamin, Gary, Cry Baby and occasional visitor Petey.

Can confirm they love to kill. Besides for birds, and mice, we never had rabbits where I am when I was growing up, but they're here now. They mutilate them. Especially by my sister I think they committed genocide on the entire neighborhood's rabbit population, and there was dozens.

Mine is an absolute bastard about it. He hunts the smaller birds in and around three boxwood bushes in my front yard. Generally house sparrows. I have bird feeders on my back deck ; he will also chase the squirrels away. They go back into the tree and just start chirping their indignations.

Feral Cats have devastated the bird population of Australia. there are native species extinct and on the verge of extinction because of them

the federal gov't pays bounties to shoot the creatures. i have been shocked how big some of these m'fers are in the wild after a couple of generations feral. I mean the size of them, plus the natural ferocity, they'd fucken terrify many dogs.

your first sentence made me think 'take care of' meant like with a .22 or something :)

haha. Newsom'e social media persona is by some way better than the reality, certainly a great deal more entertaining

funny thing is, i have seen multiple people say of Trump (often these were 'UK maga' types) that 'he brings entertainment into politics', which, yeah I know its entirely asinine, but I do wonder if Newsome might actually reap some electoral dividends just 'because of the lolz'. Not saying I like it, but its where we are, I play the room as its dealt, as Stewart Lee says.

My two adult cats were from our shelter, our feral new kitten from outside. I didn't factor in anything to do with claws. A friend worked at a vets for 10 years and they would have to stay in for 2 nights to be monitored after declawing and the blood loss was crazy.

I know you're playing devil's advocate but there is nothing positive whatsoever about declawing.
You have cats?

I agree that you shouldn't declaw cats. But I think Newsom has other, more pressing things to which he should be tending, especially if he wants to look good enough in 3 years to be president

Then again you don't have to look that good to be president

Yea, as strange as it may sound, I'm not against culling feral cat populations. I just don't think we should be de-clawing our pets. If you're going to cull them, then cull them. But no need to torture them with chronic pain for their whole lives via de-clawing.

Pet owners should be required to get their cats spayed/neutered and keep them indoors. That solves the specific problem for that cat, which won't contribute to feral populations. If it gets outside, understand that it might be mistaken for a feral cat and killed. Problem solved.

Sometimes you have to do it. As long as it is quick and not causing suffering, it's better than having them starve, be killed by coyotes, etc.

Why so quiet?
My first question is how big of an impact is that? I haven’t the slightest idea how many birds are in the US. My second is why is it only now becoming a problem since cats have been in the US for like 500 years now

I can believe they’re destructive though. Cats kill the largest variety of species in the world. They’re also incredibly effective hunters

There’s a cat missing in our neighborhood who’s been declawed

Poor guy is defenseless out there
Luckily(depending on where you live, I guess), they don't have many natural predators. Might have a harder time being a predator themselves though, and will have to put in some extra effort hunting their own food. I'd be more worried about it getting hit be a car, than getting taken out by a coyote or whatever.

Shit, I had one go missing for six months way back. His greatest enemy seemed to be plant life. Just absolutely covered in burrs in shit. Practically had to shave him bald, and turn him into a sphinx for a bit LOL.

They also kill shit just for fun and fuck around with the corpses. So, it's not like they are only hunting for food.
