Charles Oliveira: How ‘I was stupid’ against Ilia Topuria

Charlie is the most overrated UFC champ. He got a hot streak, then went back to normal.

Charles is a fun fighter to watch and I like him, but I just feel like he is way too open and his defense is not there in the striking or the ground

The best area for Charles would be if he could have got a thai clinch and hit Topuria with knees, Charles is really good at knees, its one of his best weapons, and knee Topuria right in the gut like Bo/Ridder, but outside of that I think he will lose everywhere else the fight goes, including the ground. I wasn't surprised how it ended and how quick it was. Charles may have had success if he got the clinch against the fence but apart from that its a bad style fight for him.

What I should done was not get punched in the face <Y2JSmirk>

It all makes sense now.

It's all good Charles. Ilia just so happened to land the shot first & dude got dynamite in his hands. At some point Ilia was gonna land that punch anyway.

Would love to see Charles & Max run it back especially at '55. Yes it would be a rematch, but a much different fight. But I got a feeling that if we don't get Paddy vs Ilia next, then we getting Paddy vs Max.

He tried taking Ilia down got taken down instead and put in a crucifix lol. If Ilia wanted to he could have took the fight to the ground and beat him there. Lol

That's just pure stupidity, you're interpretation of the scenario is complete nonsense and shows you have no clue what you're talking about.

Ilia was in his full guard to which Charles locked his arm up and opened guard to look for a submission attempt or a sweep. All Ilia did was step over Charles's right arm for a second, it wasn't even a crucifix position. The moment that happened Charles was already working for a leg submission and he turned that into a submission attempt. Ilia immediately looked to escape which he did and then back out of any grappling.

The scenario clearly shows that Charles is far more advanced in grappling and Ilia would not have much success there.

Wake up buddy

The problem with Ilia is that you can have the best gameplan ever and stay at range, kick and work for TDs, but eventually there will have the be a scenario where you have to trade punches with him. I believe Charles fought a good fight but that moment where punches exchange happened and Ilia did what he does best. Its almost impossible to avoid.

Best way is just to kill him first with a KO or submission. Otherwise, that moment where you gotta go strike with will happen and he's far too dangerous in those scenarios. Charles could have fought the most clean fight, but I just feel eventually those exchanges will happen.

I don't think I would favor anyone at 145 or 155 to stand with Ilia and win.. Funny enough, out of all the guys at 155 to challenge for the title, I actually think Gaethje has the best shot to KO Ilia out of everyone and has the best chance at success in those exchanges. I'd still pick Ilia to KO him.

I think Paddy has a better shot of beating him, but obvs via submission
If Paddy was smaller though, I would give him no chance lol

Oh yah, no doubt. I give Paddy a better shot at beating Ilia than Justin. But when it comes to purely striking with him, I'd give Justin the best shot.

The hell ya yapping about? Charles got dominated wherever the fight went. Ilia has more submission wins than KO's. The only reason he let Charles stand up was because it was quicker and easier to knock him out.

Maybe you should do some research and actually understand fighting before you yap like you know what you're talking about.
