Saw it today after most of the group I usually go to Marvel movies with weren't interested in this one last week and then all but one of those who were coming dropped out. Thought it was ok, nothing really to write home about which is why I've spoken to no one at home about said film.
Thanos grabs Carol around the neck with the charred gauntlet. She is wearing her red mohawk helmet. "Foolish terran, to think a little man could kill me". Suddenly feeble god Thor stabs Stormbreaker into his leg. Carol pulls the helmet back, "I am no man, duh" and then punches his head off.
It would lose the 'princess killing an evil witch' deal unless Carol is promoted to Disney princess in the next month.
Does anyone really believe the Skrulls are going to stay as these good guy immigrant aliens looking for a home? The Skrulls can't be good. There has to be some fuckery going on.
I thought it was a good movie. The poll has good as an 8 and pretty good as a 7. I cast my vote as good but used the 7 rating as....pretty good is better than good. Right?

No, pretty good is better than good...at least based on English grammar that I learnt...you are adding a positive adjective to a word...which makes it better.
Tombstone, Infinity Wars are the first 10’s in my book that come to mind quickly....9’s would be CA-Civil War, How to train your dragon 3... how about you?

As far as 10s go I think the only movies I'd give that to is the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Hateful 8, I cant conceive any way you could make those movies better (except for the 1 moment that was listed a little earlier in this thread where the chick kills the Witch King in Lord of the rings).
A 9 would be something like Infinity War which is excellent in most ways but lacks that legendary soundtrack or dialogue that you find in the aforementioned movies.
An 8 would be something like Batman Begins which is a good movie but has a quite a few plot holes.
Captain Marvel I'd put at a 5. Forgettable and bad storytelling. If it wasn't a Marvel movie Id give it a 3.
If they hadn't already had Fury say their first encounter was with Asgardians when the destroyer was sent in Thor 1, it wouldn't be such a stupid plot point, but WTF comics have as many retcons as they do issues so I guess it's par for the course.
Yes, then Thor said that contact signaled the Earth was ready for a whole new level of war. If two of the largest empires in Marvel already had encountered them, why would that line even come up? Continuity is a big thing to me and why I stopped reading comics. The MCU up until this has had very good continuity. Forcing this character into it made me sad.
Again, Thor was talking abut the Tesseract. Tinkering with the Tesseract was the signal that Earth was ready for a higher form of war.
And in the context of what we learned in Captain Marvel, the Skrulls left as the Terrans' quasi-allies and the Kree would have no reason to think Carol and the Skrulls wouldn't take the Tesseract with them when they left.
A 9 would be something like End Game which is excellent in most ways but lacks that legendary soundtrack or dialogue that you find in the aforementioned movies.

LoR as a trilogy I would give it a 9...FotR and RotK I give a 10 but TTT is an 8....for me, it’s entertainment and it usually falls into 4 categories...
I like it and will always watch when I can
I like it and will watch again when the mood strikes
I like it and will watch again but will watch the above if available
I didn’t like it and won’t watch again.

I don't think we really have the full story on the Kree and Skrulls.
and neither group really has to be "bad", per se.
I could see a story where some sort of charismatic Skrull drums up support and makes some kind of resistance group that takes revenge on the Kree and the rest of the people that let their people get slaughtered.

This is one of the only MCU origin stories that doesn't have the hero fighting a generic villain copy of himself. For that, it's above Black Panther for me. If you don't like Brie Larson for what she said, you're probably a partisan hack. If you don't like Brie Larson because she doesn't have that "Wonder Woman" oomph, I can get that. She did have excessive beauty in the comics and Brie Larson is a bit more like a Linda Hamilton tough bitch.
Plot was fine, wtf do you expect from a comic book. Acting was fine. CGI was on point. Humor was good. Stan Lee tribute was touching. Photon is set up for a future appearance now. I have nothing to complain about with this movie and I wonder what's wrong with the people who hated this one. There's just nothing to hate on unless you're a complete wackadoo stuck in a political bubble.
I graded 9 - "Great" because I find it more appropriate to compare this movie to other super hero movies. I'm not going to go and compare it to the Green Book as a reason to rate it lower.

Considering that Captain Marvel is going to be the face of the MCU going forward and she is a "cosmic character" as well as her having been helping the Skrulls for 30 years at this point I do believe they might go for some sort of Kree vs Skrull storyline.
Them retconning so much in this movie really takes away a lot from the already established story, characters and universe. The Skrulls are basically the OG villains, introduced in Fantastic Four issue number 2 but in CapMar they just turned them into a comparison to minorities that need help from the "strong white woman" since they can't do it themselves.
For a movie that has a lead that only talks about white men being bad and lack of diversity (and directors feeling the same way) I didn't see much diversity in the movie. In total there was 3 minority characters, one of whom already was an established character (Fury).
daughter for some reason has an insane amount of memories with Carroll and seem to look up to Aunt Whitey even though she was 5 when she left. Maybe if Brie actually did care about what she says she does she would've passed the roll to an african american woman instead of whitewashing the character and turning the original character into a sidekick. Notice how Monica also was divorced? Because men are bad and leave their families.
For a chick having 2 white parents, both doctors and being homeschooled I cant really say I buy her "I'm a beacon of oppression and diversity" shtick. I believe a lot of the SJW stuff is more about staying relevant, being able to play the victim card and not being the ones being hated one, much more than actually caring about their supposed causes.
Its like a great episode of Modern Family where the gay couple (Cam and Mitch) are looking to get their adopted child into pre-school and figure they are shoe-ins since they are a homosexual couple with a minority race child. The principle goes on to tell them that being homosexual isn't really a big card you can play anymore. Then when they leave the office in rolls in a black woman in a wheelchair with her lifepartner who is a blond chick and they are like "oh fuck".
I do think its a shame what they did with this movie because in and of itself the story isnt irredeemable. They could do 3 simple things that wouldve made it much more liked, especially in conservative countries like china:
Downplay the feminism, if its a strong, well written character it speaks for itself
Do your research and respect the current story line so you dont make a bunch of unnecessary retcons and plot holes
Make the character have an arc
And lastly, dont go out and publicly say you hate the majority of the audience (Imagine Robert Downey Jr receiving an award and saying "Do I hate black women? .... No... Im not saying that". The MCU would be burned to the ground.
I do understand that any business that is stagnant is considered failing and therefore they always want to reach new audiences but there is a way to get your cake and eat it too. Keep some stuff and introduce new things, but dont bash people over the head with them and shit on what came before it.
You can liken it with fighting, you want to have a good fundamental base (the hardcore fans) and some flashy stuff that sets you apart (the new fans). If the only thing you do in a fight is throw spinning wheel kicks you wont get very far.
Would someone explain this to me, how did the tesserract end up where it was, I thought it was at the bottom of the ocean at that time with Steve Rodgers
At this point, the Skrulls are not really an empire. They're fugitives. As far as the Kree goes, they weren't hostile to Earth. Certainly they didn't view Earth as a threat to them. Likely the same could be said of any alien species who was familiar with Earth. We weren't worth their attention until they noticed that we were dicking around with an Infinity Stone.
Fury didn't make that call. Curly Bill Brocius and the "World Council" did. He must not have told them about her and the pager. So it could be said that he would have used the pager if he deemed the situation unwinnable, but the Chitauri attack only lasted about half an hour or so before the Avengers locked it down.
Saw the movie tonight. I enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect, but I'd say it was above the "mediocre" ratings I'd seen. Some good, some bad.
I hated that the Skrulls were sympathetic. No way. I'm far from the authority on Skrulls, but I never read a story where they weren't the villains.
What about paging her when Loki showed up and stole the tesseract? I really don’t see why getting in contact with her is a “last resort” type deal. She said emergency only, not, “after you’ve already lost gimmie a call”

It's nice to hear some positive reviews after me and @Bobby Boulders were accused of having an agenda, when we were the first to say that the movie was fine on another thread. I scored it an 8 if I remember (I'd score it 7.5 if there was an option), but I think there were other MCU movies which were much better written (i.e. civil war, ant-man, gotg, dr strange, ragnarok etc).
As I mentioned on a previous thread, Brie was okay on her role. I still don't like her character though taking on the captain role. I just feel that she's trying too hard to be a bad ass. Steve Rogers was kind of the opposite. Just a man who's doing what he thinks is best for his country. He's humble, resilient, willing to risk his life for others, a great tactician and leader by example which makes him a very likeable captain. Brie on the other hand, is resilient and overpowered and that's kinda it. She's kinda seems smug and it's off putting. I'm sure people have different opinions about her, but I'd rather have them introduce a new character to lead the avengers. Hell i'd be fine if they introduce Cyclops just to fill the role. <45>

I have a real hard time liking Steve but I have an easy time loving him. He's lovable because he's pure and he makes decisions from the right place. I can't like him though, because he's too rigid, too often his decisions made from the right place are the wrong decision for the good of the whole. As a sports analogy, I would be happy to put Steve in play as the Captain of my team, but I would want someone like Fury to be the coach of that team, the person who makes the big decisions. Marvel has this worked out pretty well and I don't ever want to see Steve in charge of anything larger than his own team.
I found nothing about Brie's character to be "off" from someone described by the plot. Prior to the Kree training that would have a profound effect on anyone, she was a test pilot before that. Top gun pilots, test pilots, Navy and Air force pilots, their shit doesn't stink. I totally understand her arrogance and lack of emotion, and we got to see humility and emotion slowly come back to her during the movie, mostly thanks to Fury and her best friend / daughter Photon.
