Topuria has otherworldly power and unproven cardio. We don't know how it holds up over 5 rounds. It would be foolishness for Max to stand and trade with him in the pocket that early in the fight.

It's foolishness for Max to go into the pocket with Gaethje and have both throw as many bombs as they can at the end of a fight that he had otherwise already won. That's pretty much the point of the BMF thing - not to highlight the best fighters but the toughest.

But the BMF thing is also pretty dumb and just make the UFC look worse by having WWE style gimmick titles so I don't criticize Max for not doing that right away against Ilia. It made for the better fight.

What he did was more badass than the ridiculous points max has done when his fight is battered, beaten and concussed and telling said fighter to lay down their defenses and trade.

And there's the "I'm the best boxer in the UFC" dodging and punching -and landing- while talking to the commentators.
And teaching Ortega how to block a 1-2 mid-fight.

Trading with a fighter you've already rocked multiple times and beat down for 24 minutes is not more ballsy than trading with them in the opening seconds of a fight. Max knows this, too
