I'm not even Californian, lol. I've only been here for 3.5 years from Virginia, before that Amsterdam and before that England. I'm allowed to move wherever I want with my green card but don't really want to set down roots here in Silicon Valley which a decent 3 bed home will cost me 1.6 million as opposed to 350/400k in Austin. I'm not allowed to vote till 2022 so politics have fuck all to do with it. I like California, you really cannot beat the weather till a week or so ago, but I have friends in Austin and for 20 or so years knew I would like it there. Husband spent some time there and loved it.
I’ve mentioned this before but when you buy a house in CA, it is more than a house you’re going to be living in. It is a piece of investment.
Silicon Valley’s housing prices are out of control right now. There will eventually be a market correction that fixes that. But there are plenty of places in California where housing is more affordable. Not to mention, if you are employed here, you make more money anyway. But people seem to think California is only LA, Silicon Valley, and SF. LA is shit, and it always has been. So I don’t understand why people are like “LA has turned into a shithole.” It has always been a shithole for the most part. A shithole with some really wealthy areas.

At least my rent has been capped. Yeah I know it's all relative, husband was earning an exorbitant amount before he got Covid laid off but when you take into account the overheads it evens itself out to what he was on in VA. Now I'm the only one working it's a bit stressful being he was the main breadwinner.
