It's a mixed bag. There definitely are places that are more affordable but where I grew up in the Bay Area is largely unaffordable for me without making significant lifestyle changes and getting roommates or letting myself get tamed into a small place with a girlfriend.

I've been there about three times twice in San Diego
and three times around the LA area traveled between the two cities when I went those times.

Anyways enjoyed my time there but I could never afford to live there.

So to those of my Cali sherbros what are the things you love and hate about you state from politics to cost of living ect.

How about rural areas of Cali? Is it affordable there?
I actually prefer places like Santa barbara and san luis obispo it is very green there like the vegetation is different than the rest of CA. Pismo beach probably has the best chowder which is an odd quirk. If CA had Nevada's gun laws I would never leave here but it doesn't.

Frankly I have little interest in modern movies. I'm talking about the revival houses that play old movies, those screenings are very popular, and show little sign of dying, people love it.

Today they are screening All the President's Men at The Egyptian and Rear Window at the Aero both in 35mm. And a 2000's horror marathon at the New Beverly...

That's just today! Every month has countless screenings of old and obscure films to watch.
Rear Window was a fantastic film, some classic films I'd like to see on the big screen:
Casablanca
The French Connection
Spartacus
To Catch a Thief
An American Werewolf in London

I'd like to again hopefully not far down the road.

I've tried to schedule vacations fairly recently, but the only reason for me to go down there is for movies and the theaters release the monthly schedules like a week before the new month so it's hard to get my shit together that fast.

There is a good chance you'd be able to see all of those at some point.

ive lived my whole life in california. Mostly ventura county where I grew up and live now, also lived for 7 years in Sacramento. Ive visted every corner of this state.

As others have said you have everything here. If you like skiing and snow boarding, we got that. You like huge pine trees and forrests, we got that. Desserts, beaches, small quiet towns, big bustling cities.

I dont care for driving through los angeles if i can avoid it, tons of traffic. Was just there last weekend for the 21 pilots concert in downtown and it took for ever to get anywhere. Cost of living is pretty big turnoff. Luckily me and the wife do around 320k a year and have no kids or debt so we can live comfortably in a decent (not great) house.

San Diego is amazing and honestly when I travel in other parts of the US I'm usually ready to come back here after three days. I'm fortunate to have bought a house here five years ago. It sucks for the average person to buy here. But honestly if you're renting and not living right near the beach, it really isn't that much more than any other desirable area of any major city.

Looking forward to going to the beach on Thanksgiving lol. Probably going to take the Vette on the winding roads into the mountains tomorrow. As a car enthusiast, it's nice to be able to drive a rear wheel drive sports/muscle car year round.

SLO is great but it's only a good place to live if you work remotely. Not much of a job market there.

I love SoCal. Retired young & living the dream. I live in Wine Country on a Ranch near some awesome Bass Fishing Lakes. Good schools for my kids, quiet living. Not far to drive & hit mountains, deserts, beaches or any of the big cities. Weather is always great.

I hate what the politics have done. I hate the big cities & its criminal how expensive they have made it.

Also . . .

cheers on buying a house 5 years ago. Same here, bought mine in 2020 and its list value has gone up about 31% . Plus I got that low interest rate before it took back off. The market is much more costly today.

I went to Santa Monica in 2019 and was shocked by the amount of homeless people, even in "nice" parts.

Muscle Beach looked like a scene out of a new fallout game.

That being said CA does have some unique and powerful vibes, esp for anyone that grew up with Hollywood movies.

Some dude in the tech industry drove like 3 hrs a day round-trip and lived in SLO. I would post the video if I remembered the title. The only job there is probably costco. it is for retired folks with a couple million in the bank especially santa barbara and montecito is wealthy.

I live in Visalia, that is in the San Joaquin Valley half way between Fresno and Bakersfield.

The cool thing about Cali is the fact we have it all and in abundance, there is all that coast, all those mountains, the deserts, we border a foreign country, all these sports teams.

Born and raised here and have never wanted for anything I couldn;t have within reason, we are not rich.

I can be high in those mountains in a few hours, be over at the coast in a few hours, be up north down down south in a few hours, wandering the desert in a few hours, life is good,

Los Angeles is where I was born and raised. I have traveled the world (posting this from an airport in Switzerland rn) but there is no place like my home. The wealth gap is absolutely enormous but it is a hustlers paradise. The access to wealth is pretty unimaginable. I built my businesses in LA I met my partners in LA I raised capital (many times over) in LA. If you have drive, ambition, hustle I truly believe it is unparalleled. Also when you have money living in the city is amazing. My home is in weho and I live a beautiful and blessed life.

If you focus on the negatives ie cost of living, homelessness, politics it can ruin your outlook on just about anywhere and especially Los Angeles. I am a glass half filled guy so I focus on all of the positive aspects of LA. There is a reason it is so populated and the cost of living is so high. People travel from everywhere to “try to make it in LA”. It isn’t perfect but it’s perfect for me.

Go rawhide! Are they even called that anymore lol

Born and raised there, sold my house and left two years ago. You can have it, that is all.
