Cain Velasquez is Mexican/isn't Mexican Thread ***Threads Merged***

Brown pride? Is that pride in being the color brown? Or is it being proud of his Mexican heritage? There are a lot of different brown people all over the world. I'm confused.

Me too, seriously.

Before Cain, I have NEVER heard a single reference to Mexicans as "Brown" people.

If I go out at lunch to a construction site here in Baltimore, and roll down the window of my Truck and shout: Hi, all of you Brown folk!

Are they going to react with pride and wave back to me? Maybe I shouldn't as they most likely would take being called "Brown" as an extremely serious insult:confused:

- CHALLENGE: FIND ME A PICTURE OF CAIN HOLDING AN AMERICAN FLAG

close enough?

I really don't see the big deal here? Why would anyone be upset?

Cain could have a nigerian pride and i couldnt give a shit. He feels mexican. Good on him for not abandon his roots.

Let's just hope for a good fight

Do most Mexico inhabitants generally submit to some "Brown Pride" philosophy?

Honestly, just asking?

I am aware of many different "cultures" within Mexico, and some of them in the southern portion of Mexico near Central America have darker complexions.

I have just never honestly heard any citizen of Mexico being seriously "vocal" or demonstrative of this philosophy.

To be 100% honest, in the 1000's of US residents with Mexican heritage that I have come into contact with never registered to me as "Brown".

Is Cuba also considered "Brown People"? Maybe Mir and Conseco should have also sported "Brown Pride" tats!

It's just the culture we have as Mexicans. My mexican family is culturally different from my Chinese friend's family.

I think you are getting too caught up on literal meaning of what it is to be "brown". Mexican is multi-ethnic. Are ancestry is all over the place. "Latino Pride" may have been a more politically correct tattoo.

Jesus Christ. Why are these threads being made. Shut the fuck up.

He was not born in Mexico and is therefore not Mexican.

My family is Scottish. I wasn't born in Scotland. I'm not Scottish.

Fucking hell, guys.

i guess brian stann is japanese then

My god who gives a shit? I thought we got past this nonsense 5 years ago.

I wonder if Crane can sing the National Anthem of Mexico or the National Anthem of the USA better.

From now on I will identify myself as an ancient Roman. If I will ever be a ufc champ, I will be the first ancient Roman champ in the history of the org.
I also have some Roman tatts, so I'm set.

It's the UFC who is pushing it way too far. It's not Cain's fault. He is proud of his heritage but in a quiet respectful way. The UFC is pushing his race to get more $$$.

He's had the "Brown Pride" tattoo before he was even in the UFC so squash your "Cains only Mexican for marketing purposes" theory.

- Cain identifies himself as Mexican.

He's talking about his heritage when he says hes Mexican. It's very common in the US.
I was raised by immigrants (Portuguese parents) who know little English with heavy Portuguese culture at home. I'm still American. Most American's are very proud of their heritage like me and Cain. We're still American. If people ask me what I am I say Portuguese. It's so simple.

That's what Americans do.

"Brown" is usually used to refer to people of Latin American descent, the same way "black" is used for people of African descent, even though "brown" is more colloquial and probably won't show up on the census forms any time soon.

From what I understand, Cain was born in the States, which makes him an American citizen, but I don't see a problem with him identifying with his ethnic roots. Marcus Davis, Jake O'Brien, Pat Miletich, and Stipe Miocic do the same.

It's not that he's not Mexican. He's just not the first.

Sure he had the tattoo, but they've definitely milked Cain for the Hispanic market. As for him identifying himself as Mexican, I can call myself a Klingon, but it don't make me one.
If he identifies with Mexico more than America, why does he continue to live in the US? He has the money to move.

edit: read this wrong. is it true he cant speak spanish?? his dad cant speak english lol

He can speak Spanish but apparently not well and isn't fluent, he probably can understand more than he can say. I'm know some Spanish but I can understand a lot more than I can say, I would think it would be the same for most non fluent Spanish speakers.

I don't think any of those (outside Davis) milk it as much as Cain does.
