Cain Velasquez is Mexican/isn't Mexican Thread ***Threads Merged***

He wasn't born in Mexico
He doesn't live in Mexico

Do most Mexico inhabitants generally submit to some "Brown Pride" philosophy?

Honestly, just asking?

I am aware of many different "cultures" within Mexico, and some of them in the southern portion of Mexico near Central America have darker complexions.

I have just never honestly heard any citizen of Mexico being seriously "vocal" or demonstrative of this philosophy.

To be 100% honest, in the 1000's of US residents with Mexican heritage that I have come into contact with never registered to me as "Brown".

Is Cuba also considered "Brown People"? Maybe Mir and Conseco should have also sported "Brown Pride" tats!

- He's had the "Brown Pride" tattoo before he was even in the UFC so squash your "Cains only Mexican for marketing purposes" theory.

- Cain identifies himself as Mexican.

- CHALLENGE: FIND ME A PICTURE OF CAIN HOLDING AN AMERICAN FLAG

Not that it makes a bit of difference, but if we're labeling people is day he's American with Mexican heritage.

inb4 "brown pride tattoo is racist". Seriously though, just like with Stann and Kennedy, it's more the Zuffa PR Department playing up their military service, than the fighters themselves talking about it. I mean Kennedy talks about it a bit, but nothing like what's-his-face-that-won-TUF (you know, the handsome guy with the really exciting wrestling style). Same with Cain - he was kind of groomed to be this crossover star into what Zuffa hopes will be their next market (that being countries in Latin America other than Brazil). The problem has been that he has been inactive for long stretches, has no personality, and speaks Spanish like Michael Bloomberg did.

ive literally never heard anyone claim that his tattoo is racist and secondly how is zuffa forcing this upon him when he got a freaking "brown pride" tattoo all by himself

apparently he was hella mad after the werdum comments as well

Try to make them as short as possible. I'll get us started by listing both why some people might think he IS or ISN'T:

Cain IS Mexican because:

- He likely has Mexican citizenship

- He was raised by two Mexican immigrant parents, so his upbringing, at home at least, was very Mexican

Cain ISN'T Mexican because:

- He was born (less importantly) and grew up (more importantly) in the United States, making him culturally American in many ways

- He lives year-round in the United States

- Though he does have a very good command of the Spanish language, he does not speak the language like a native speaker, like any "real Mexican" would

Thoughts?

1) He doesn't

2) Like many first generation Americans I was raised by immigrants (Portuguese parents) who know little English with heavy Portuguese culture at home. I'm still American. Most American's are very proud of their heritage like me and Cain. We're still American.

It's the land of immigrants. "Melting Pot"

He's Chicano
This argument is fuckin stupid tho. If he considers himself Mexican then who are any of you to say otherwise.

Alexander Hamilton wasn't born in the United States.

It would have been tough because the United States did not exist when he was born.

Technically neither were the first 7 Presidents.

Brown pride? Is that pride in being the color brown? Or is it being proud of his Mexican heritage? There are a lot of different brown people all over the world. I'm confused.

1) Mexican's are tough and hard working. Therefore, Cain is not Mexican.

Which nationality is prone to injury and going long periods of time without fulfilling their responsibilities? That's probably what Cain is.

There is no "if" Cain is an American of Mexican descent.

This whole thing is almost as annoying as the title "African American".

Hit the nail on the head. It drives me nuts people just don't say American. Why don't they identify as Floridian American, or Wyoming American. That makes more sense.

Why wouldn't he? He's talking about his heritage when he says he's Mexican. I'm Portuguese. But I'm still an American. And so is Cain.

I thought east Indian people were brown..now Mexicans are too? Ok......

He can't stand to be there for more than 2 weeks.

Jesus Christ. Why are these threads being made. Shut the fuck up.

He was not born in Mexico and is therefore not Mexican.

My family is Scottish. I wasn't born in Scotland. I'm not Scottish.

Fucking hell, guys.
