Cain Velasquez is Mexican/isn't Mexican Thread ***Threads Merged***

I find it amusing how much attention this is getting. Let me pose this question. If You were to get in a car accident with someone who looked like Cain Velasquez and thet fled the scene Jon Jones style. How would you describe him to the Police? Be honest. It seems that we only have a problem with shit like this when its to benefit some bullshit argument. Im pretty sure everywhere he goes hes identified as a mexican before he even opens his mouth.

I'm from Mexico and I live in the USA. Most people don't know I'm Mexican because I fit in well here. I don't look like the stereotypical Mexican or Mexican-American so people don't assume I'm Mexican. People in the USA sometimes think I'm of Middle-Eastern, Brazilian, or Argentine descent. People also assume I was born and raised in the USA. But I'm from Mexico.

In Mexico, people will know he is American as soon as he opens his mouth. :icon_chee

Did anyone explain yet why Cain's tattoo which is supposed to somehow project his love of his heritage/culture is in English and not in Spanish?

I actually already did, brown pride was a term made popular in the 60's during civil rights era mainly by mex American college students as a way of showing unity and pride in standing together against what they felt at that time was inequality and being treated like second class citizens because they were not white Americans.

I wouldn't pretend to be able to know that his ancestors, or he himself, were from Mexico, as opposed to being from, say, some other Central American or South American country. So I'd say he looked Latino.

Me as well

So you are saying that Asians, African-Americans, Spanish, etc., all call you 'American', but whites don't?

You got me. Blacks, Asians, etc. have called me Mexican before too, but they're not the ones complaining about Cain being American in these threads.

How the F do you know what races & nationality posters are??

You really have a racist chip on your shoulder man.

If you actually read the thread, you would see MANY have stated that they are considered minorities etc, & had issues with Cain.

I don't think you are coming from a place of 'hate', but look into your own racist projections, before calling others out man.
Yours are very obvious

it doesn't matter how an american feels about the country they came from. ask the folks from that country if they view that american as the same as them. that is the question to ask.

It does matter how an American feels about the country they came from. How the folks from the country they came from feel about them also matters, but it is a separate issue.

How is this even a fucking issue? If he sees himself as Mexican then he's Mexican, how the fuck is it anyone's business what he decides to call himself? I'm white, but I'm from Oxnard, so I'm pretty GD Mexican myself. Don't even use silverware when I eat, I just grab shit with a part of a tortilla.

My father was a Mexican immigrant, I identify myself as American. I feel like I am just as American as any white American with more generations in this country. Don't let these shertards fool you, My whole life I've had people call me and describe me as Mexican. Majority of my friends growing up and people I work with are white, so I wonder why they never call me American? I don't ever claim being Mexican or carry a Mexican flag so why am I Mexican? seems like white Americans want to pick and choose when you are American if it benefits their argument.

Cry me a river holmes! Bottom line is the VAST majority of Mexican Americans I know call themselves Mexicans, so considering I got a D- in mind reading in college, there is no way I would know you would prefer to be called "American" instead of "Mexican." Those white people are being respectful because they think that's what you would prefer to be called, you playing the race card isn't helping anyone. It just makes you look like a child.

Sherdog is the only place this is an issue lol some of you people really need to interact with people outside

I don't think he even realized he did it
That is the sad part

Oh & Mike Ness kicks ass

If that is REALLY what you think, than you really need to go outside & interact with people man.

This board is a lot less extreme on these matters than in the real world!

he is about as mexican as the plastic hawaiian hula dancer that says made in china. But who cares?

You are rt to a point, my views are shaped from a lot of personal experience and witnessed a lot of racial tensions. It's not right for me to assume most of the Cain hate is from white people but claiming with complete confidence that I'm totally off with my assumption would be a bit naive IMO, but again, that is just MY opinion.

That goes for every single Latino American I've ever met and i've met a shit ton. Shit us Puerto Ricans are born american and still identify as Puerto Rican just like Hawaiians are identified as Hawaiians. That doesn't mean we're not proud to be american tho.

Very fair & honest reply man.

Like I said, you don't come across as hateful, but you did project racism (not that you are).

I too have witnessed a lot of racist tension & that had the reverse effect on me - it made me think 4x before saying something that can incite.

I interact with plenty of people, I've gone to mexico several times and frequent Puerto Rico ( I was born in Ponce PR) and have plenty of friends that come from both places even more friends that are first generation americans. I've never seen anyone question whether guys like oscar de la hoya or Danny Garcia are truly Mexican or Puerto Rican just because they weren't born in Mexico or Puerto Rico. It's not an issue in the latin community
