butterfly is the best guard

i mainly use eddie's definition for 1/4 guard because it makes more sense, since they are 1/2 passed your 1/2 guard

yea i know, i like z guard....i love to use it against bigger guys since they cant muscle themselves on top of me. i just started playing with zguard recently, it seems good to transition into leglocks on the opposite leg as well.

i think a while ago i seen the machado quarter guard, but i forgot about it and then just went with eddies definition. what is the machado quarter guard, do you have a picture?

Check the link. Gustavo Machado does a sweep from his version of the quarter guard.

So it's basically a combination of half guard and 'lasso' guard. I've been in this position quite a few times. I might have to check out Machado's dvd on this.

I rarely played BFG until I started Judo. I am not allowed to used closed guard as its considered stalling and BFG works wonders against Judo players. Although I still plan to make BJJ a lifelong pursuit I am now quite happy that Judo is forcing me to change my game. I am getting more creative, learning new things on my own, and becoming a more technical and strategic players as a result. The funny thing is I was only taught one technique from butterfly guard in BJJ ever.

I feel butterfly works very well for me too. I especially like working a butterfly guard when starting from the knees..

I don't know how it is with gi, but I train no gi and I've never seen anyone use butterfly guard in my class nor have I ever attempted it. In fact I've never seen anyone play no gi with any type of open guard. I'm thinking it's just way easier to pass peoples' guard when doing no gi. Any type of open guard just results in getting a knee across your leg to pin it down and a quick side control. I have only been training for a year though and at a smaller club with a more sambo influence in the ground game, so I'm not sure if anyone agrees with that?

After watching some instructionals, and listening to advise on this board, I started playing BFG the correct way.

I have been attempting BFG lately. Can you recommend any good instructionals?
Stephen Kesting's dvd is supposed to be really good.

Marcelo Garcia's X guard book has a very detailed breakdown of the butterfly guard in it. It's definitely improved my game.
