Media BSD says he was completely dehydrated in Poirier fight, Dustin responds

Do you think that played a factor last weekend?

This guy trying to be the new Tito?

He's completely embarrassing himself.

Firstly, he was clearly worse at boxing. So I think before anything else is blamed, that is to blame. He didn't get gassed, he didn't get caught, he was just outboxed. Technique was the culprit.

Secondly, it's your choice to cut from 195 to 155. You could do less of a cut to welterweight but you know you'd have less of a size advantage. When you choose to cut that much you accept all the consequences of cutting that much.

Classy response from Dustin. Maybe BSD was dehydrated, maybe not. But from Dustin's perspective, he just needs to keep on his own training and fighting and not worry about BSD.

Would like to see his chin get tested by the likes of a Dan Hooker or Bobby Green

Or see him try and grapple-fuck a guy like Grant Dawson

I think Hooker vs BSD is a great comeback fight for him and a good test for Hooker.

I think BSD probably beats Hooker, but you never know how a fighter comes back from a KO.

Why are people clowning this guy? He hasn't said anything unreasonable and comes across like a decent, respectful guy. Should he fucking skip and sing a happy song about how he got ktfo in the biggest fight of his life?

I doubt he's lying, but he should keep this to himself. Fighting is hard enough so I'm not going to give him shit for losing while being sick and instead I'll give him the respect he deserves for not dropping out, but it is indeed a bad look to continue to double down on this.

To answer the question in the poll, do I think it played a part in his performance this past Saturday? Yes. I still think he would have lost. His striking defense leaves a lot to be desired and Poirier is incredibly composed in the standup portion of a fight.
That's my exact point of view. Clearly, he didn't want to cancel the fight ; even diminished, it would've been a terrible idea to miss such an opportunity (Dustin obviously wouldn't have waited for him at this point in his career).

That being said, I'm really annoyed by the way he gives excuses instead of giving credit to Dustin. The guy is supposed to have strong moral values and this is disappointing.

He should seek treatment and get back to work. He made good progress since his début, I'm still optimistic for the future.

It’s just 1 excuse after another. He lost because he treaded in the pocket with his chin in the air. He thought he could eat Poiriers best shots and he as wrong

He’s really not taken his loss very well. He certainly isnt gonna learn anything from it as he thinks his loss was not on him?

He shouldn't make a bunch of excuses after getting knocked the fuck out. You were dehydrated? Don't fight then. You had staph? Don't fight then. You got out of bed on the wrong side? Don't fight then.

He chose to fight and he lost. So live with it.

I have no doubt that the infection and antibiotics made harder a weight cut that is already consequential.

But there is a deeper problem with BSD, he carries a shitload of injuries for a guy his age. He needs to review his training philosophy.
The culture in french army (despite the white flag memes) especially special forces, is to always force through pain and injuries. It's fine for the army because they retire most guys after 5-10 years but they age at 3x the normal rate and lots of them are crippled at 40.

LOL I dont think I've ever read a post full of more bullshit. Age 3X fast, crippled at 40? LOL. I swear, people just get on the internet and say the dumbest shit they can possibly think of.

Not buying it.

BSD was in Poirier's face the entire time, and was also getting tagged with counter shots very early into the fight.

BSD did not seem tired or drained until he started getting tagged with hard shots after numerous failed takedown attempts and exhaustive grappling. Dustin was also digging some hard shots to the body.

BSD put all of his eggs in one basket, and tried too hard to end the fight early. He tried too hard to stay aggressive the entire fight. Then he got sloppy, leaving easy openings for Dustin to snipe him.

Dustin weathered the storm (which many others could not) and picked the perfect shots to turn the fight in his favor. And then, like a veteran, he finished it up.

He'll be better after this fight, because now he gets to learn that his blitz style doesn't work against seasoned vets who know how to handle it.

BSD did not fight like was sick

It wasn't exhaustion that lead to his defeat either...
it was his recklessness against a sound veteran

That, and cutting such MASSIVE weight. Dude looked at least a weight class bigger than Dustin

BSD was the up'n'comer fighting a star. He had everything to gain here. He should just take his loss like a man.

Yes yes. And I was completely wasted trying to fuck this chic and after the first three minutes going strong I knocked myself out.

Doesn’t change the fact it’s a bad excuse and I failed to deliver.

I don't know why fighters come out with these public excuses after the fight.

EVEN IF what he's saying is true, he chose to fight. Period. If you weren't anywhere near 100% then you shouldn't have fought. Sucks, but that's reality. Making excuses just makes you look weak IMO. Just take the loss and move on.

So fascinating to see MMA fans like you spending so much time at watching fights & news being so blind as not seeing how BSD was only a shadow of himself just before the fight. I was very surprised he could do ok at the first round and 2nd round was not surpising at all.

This may come as a shock to some of the RN's/MD's here on Sherdog, but taking broad spectrum antibiotics to treat an existing infection can have several side effects, including diarrhea --> electrolyte imbalance / dehydration. It can also make you, in general, feel like absolute ass.

I don't think benoit is doing himself any favors attempting to explain any mitigating factors here, especially in translations. But I'm not surprised he had a suboptimal performance given the circumstances. He was also performing well in spite of, anyway.

Hopefully he lives and learns from every aspect he can in this scenario: antibiotic therapy so close to a fight, weight management difficulties on antibiotic therapy, and attempting to be so transparent post-fight. Best to just keep mum and come back stronger next time, sharing these details only with Dana and UFC match makers.

I agree with this dork with a new account.
Poirer covered it well and responded perfectly.

The reality is the better fighter weathered the early storm and won via a brutal right hook.
BSD gets finished by that shot, fully hydrated, no staph and even at 170. He has issues defensively and ran face first into a hook.
