International Brexit Discussions v11: U.K and Switzerland sign post-Brexit financial services deal

Well then, what do they need the EU for

Apparently they don't. Pretty sure the E.U doesn't need them either. It's a lukewarm Want for both negotiating teams at best, not an absolute-critical Need for survival.

I say just end this exasperating shit with No Deal and let the chips fall. Should prove to be much more interesting to the rest of us spectators than this years-long stalemate that keeps going in circle.

Well, yeah. Even North Korea is still surviving. But obviously all sides would be better off with a deal.

The level playing field thing will turn out to be the deal breaker imo. No way the EU can allow dumping on UK side. No way the UK wants to sign that option away, conversely.

The constant posturing against that very logical idea is what would kill it though.

Hell, you can see plenty of that poison in this very thread, with people from both sides talking like only the other side needs it but they don't.

So yeah, let it ends with No Deal. No single market for businesses, no fish for fishermen, no nothing, sometimes people needs a rude awakening before the process can restart in earnest down the road.

Everything is fucked. Companies are flying stuff usually shipped to avoid getting the penalty after this month. Ships are being unloaded to truck goods from Norway to France and then the Chunnel to England.

I have to say I am proud of the EU. Despite internal frictions, we have not been divided. Barnier did a fantastic job.

If the UK had been able to clearly formulate what they want (besides combined cake-eating and having), an incredible amount of political resources could have been saved.

What is the situation between UK and the Rest of EEA countries?

Roll over agreements are in place. However if airports/ports are blocked due to customs, anything by road will soon face 3 customs checks. Entering the EU, leaving the EU and entering the UK.

This negotiation is like a zombie that keeps on dragging its feet in slow-motion.

For Boris Johnson, self-interest is always first. That's why he'll do a Brexit deal

The prime minister only has to glance at the polls to see little support for no deal. He knows any blame will lie with him alone

Excellent opinion piece. I recommend reading the whole thing.

Cliffs:

  • Boris does what is best for him
  • Murdoch papers have changed their tune and see Brexit crisis and huge additional subsidies on the horizon
  • Polls say support for hard Brexit is between 15 and 25%
  • Only 23% say government is handling Brexit well
  • Johnson will eventually (at the very end) make a deal because it is what's best for him

Therein lies the rub. This decision was not made on the back of long-term governmental research and planning, but on the whims of an electorate fed false promises and many straight-up lies. After the referendum result had been called, the country should have been presented with the provisional terms of a new relationship with Europe and afforded a final decision: this is what Brexit will actually be like -do you still want to leave? This could have speeded up the negotiation process somewhat (especially for Theresa May who was for remaining in the EU) and avoided the current mess where one of the most prominent advocates for Brexit is now scrambling in a last ditch effort to get a deal that will soften the crash out of Europe, rather than signing off on a smooth transition out and onwards to a better national position.
