Officials in Boston are considering allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections, according to The Associated Press.

The City Council’s Committee on Government Operations is scheduled to hold a hearing Tuesday to discuss allowing immigrant residents with legal status in the United States to participate in municipal elections.

“The purpose of our local government, including the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement, is to strengthen the ability of diverse, cultural, and linguistic communities to play an active role in the economic, civic, social and cultural life of the City of Boston,” City Council President Andrea Campbell, who requested the hearing, said earlier this year, according to local ABC affiliate WCVB.

The city is reportedly exploring methods that will make its local election more inclusive by allowing participation by legal permanent residents, visa holders and residents who are legally residing in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status or the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Immigrant residents account for almost 28.5% of the city’s population, according to Campbell. A spending report from 2015 said immigrant residents in the city have paid $116 million in state and local taxes and generated about $3.4 billion in spending.

How many times were we condescendingly told this wouldn't happen?

Well it makes sense to me. If they have constitutional rights, they should have the right to vote on the people in charge. IMO.

State (and municipal) voting is a state right, not a federal one. This is up to the states, and has nothing whatsoever to do with federal elections. I believe 11 states allow for permanent nonresidents to vote in some capacity.

Liberals getting what they wanted.

This was always the endgame

Lol @ this bullshit. The second someone says 'Voter ID' and this argument goes out the window and becomes racist.

What be the purpose of that? Is someone trying to get more votes, and targeting that particular demo?

If permanent residents (green card holders) are allowed to own property and pay taxes then they should be allowed to at least vote in municipal elections

Does your argument also apply to voter ID?
No, my "argument" is the stating of the fact that state elections and federal elections are not the same, and have different constitutional requirements. Something you don't seem to understand when you dramatically queef about being condescended to about your conspiracy theory, which has proven itself a valid target of condescension.

I expect you to go equally apeshit on Montana, Arizona, Delaware, Connecticut, and New Mexico, among others.

So why not federal elections?

Ngeh, I suppose due to impact on national issues (security, borders, social issues) that can only be decided by people vetted for by the state through its naturalized citizenship system.

For local elections whatever. I'd still require citizenship for all candidates.

Liberals going full retard nothing new

But if they are already voting for mayors, representatives, and propositions your argument doesn't give a good reason to stop at the municipal level.

Well this is a local (Boston) election not a state one so not only is your fact is meaningless, but you refuse to stand by it when the circumstances is not to your liking. So once again....lol

For permanent legal residents, I agree.

Just a question, where could I move to become a legal resident but not a citizen and get to vote? I am guessing there are very few places and if there is I am going to guess it is someplace in Europe?
