Blue Belt beating Black Belt

and this is why you have to sit at the kid's table during Thanksgiving

There's no need to get personal. If a piece of cloth means a lot to you, that's fine with me. I'm just pointing out the obvious flaws in the colored belt system.

LOL at everyone in this thread being all like "so what?" Guess what, it still is an upset. Yeah, belts don't determine outcomes, no shit. But on average, a black belt is supposed to be a good deal better than a blue belt. We're talking about someone with a year or two of experience beating someone who is supposed to be an expert. It should be surprising to see, and for me it is. I know it happens, but it isn't common like people seem to be acting.

That said, there are numerous other possible factors, including age, size, and conditioning, not to mention competition experience and injuries.

All true. though the blue seems to have quite a bit of nogi xp under his belt. Which might explain his ferocious passing game.

Not an uncommon thing seeing purples tap blacks in brazil. When I was a brown training there this 17 year old blue belt came in and tapped me multiple times along with tapping some blacks as well that same night.

probably Dante Leon

i think that makes a much bigger difference than people would openly admit but all know in their minds anyway. thats why many people arent that surprised.

I'm a 3 stripe white and I tapped out a Rickson Gracie BB. I know it's a 1 in 50 chance but I got my 1.

Could have been a sandbagging blue belt.

Another factor into the equation, is that in small towns, you would have guys training at Submission Wrestling Gyms (Nogi) because there was no GI BJJ Instructors in town. Perhaps that blue belt was training much longer then his belt would lead you to?

I have a friend who is a LEGIT 4 Stripe Purple Belt, who lost to a white belt in competition, I was in shock, but it turns out that this guy trained for 10 years without the gi, but only started gi 6 months earlier.

My buddy is a blue belt and I don't do BJJ at all, but with high school wrestling, and a huge strength advantage, I can ball him up with little effort.

Doesnt the guy says himself, in the youtube description, that he has extensive no gi training?

That was not blue belt level pressure and hip aliveness...imo

Pretty sure that I had a match with that Black Belt in No Gi back when he was a Brown Belt and I was a Blue Belt

Belt colors don't mean anything. The belt system is flawed. It impedes growth by restricting techniques to certain belt colors. That is the only reason higher ranked belts beat lower ranked belts so flawlessly. If everyone was taught the same things, there wouldn't be a huge gap in skill between belt colors thus making the belt system obsolete.

i have read many, many stupid posts on sherdog over the years... this has got to be top 5 though

holy fucking shit. :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Everyone in this thread who's saying "it's just a piece of cloth that holds you pants up": it's not supposed to be though is it? If someone gives you a black belt, a PURPLE belt even, they're saying "you're a bad motherfucker". It SHOULD mean you're really, really fucking good. Getting a belt should mean you're so good that if you were still whatever belt you were previously you'd be one of the best of that belt in whatever country you're from. It shouldn't be fucking gifted out because you've been there a certain amount of time and are a "student of the sport", or whatever other honey-coating you want to give to gifted belts. If you're promoted to a new belt you should be fucking SMASHING everyone at the belt level below you. Purple belts should SMASH all the blue belts, regardless of size, brown belts should SMASH all the purple belts, and black belts should SMASH all the brown belts. If it's not done that way, this shit will start to happen more and more often.

I really dislike this "well, you know, black belts are humans too". They're human, but they're supposed to represent an extreme level of skill at a very specific task: strangling the shit out of people.

what I haven't gotten far into this thread yet but this is a ridiculous way of thinking some people would never get to black belt if this is correct I think it's stupid to think every black belt should be a freakin unicorn(mythical creature and smash everyone)
obviously they should smash people with zero experiennce but after a coup;e of years some people can get pretty good

Why not, it is true in striking. Someone with no athletic talent who applies himself to Muay Thai for 4 years can be beat by someone with lots of athletic talent who trains for like 6 months.

In most tournaments not using the belt system, an advanced player is usually 3 years and up...

So after a few years, bjj belts dont indicate who can beat who, but just your technical comprehension.

What's stupid about it? Do you not understand some of the vocabulary? Or are you stupid enough to believe that colorful piece of cloth you bought from your Rorion Grace affiliate means something in respect to your skills?

let me ask a question? how long have you been grappling? I got the answer, ZERO days, how do I know? well whoe ever thinks bjj is some crap where the instructor hiddes super ninjas technniques from lower belts so they dont beat higher belts... cleary has never ever step a foot in a bjj gym.....

This Roger Gracie dude is so fucked up, I bet his white belt students will beat him right of the bat if he wouldve shown his secret technique to them....right? lmfao...
