I didn't read the book, so I can't comment on that. This movie doesn't pandor like the SW sequel. This is not a typical Hollywood film. Watching it you will wonder how it even got made. Look, I'm the guy that sighs when they cast 6'5" Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. I get where you're coming from, but I don't think you'll be disappointed for the reasons you're expressing.

The book is very good but that isn't what I am talking about. The book is very different.

What is the message in Blade Runner? These guys can run faster, are stronger, etc. they are better than us in every way, except one: emotions/ethics. At the end of Blade Runner, Batty proves himself ethically superior to Deckard by letting him live. They are more human than human as advertised. Scott destroyed that message by trying to add a cheap twist of Deckard being a replicant which totally unfangs the message. Who gives a fuck if one android shows another android the light? It is the androids teaching humans and turning it around on them that makes the ending great. Like, "How dare you kill something like me? How dare you think you are better than me?" I have seen things you wouldn't believe.

By not understanding the script I meant he didn't understand the screenwriters. The screenwriters say Deckard isn't a replicant.

Agreed, but you still loved BR, right?
I know PK Dick said he wasn't either, and it is much more meaningful that he's not. This movie does seem to build on Scott's interpretation, but its still vague.
I do have to watch it a second time.

I probably would actually like the movie. Blade Runner is an acquired taste to begin with and many people don't like the pacing.

Blade Runner is a special movie because it got 2 great stories out of one premise. The book is great but totally different. Totally different message. There are great things in Electric Sheep that aren't in Blade Runner and there are great things in Blade Runner that aren't in Electric Sheep.

As I have seen one reviewer say, Electric Sheep is an anti-android movie. Blade Runner is a pro android movie.

The sequel kinda gets into this.

I like your angle, tho.

I didn't realize the film was 2 hours and 45 mins!

It felt long but not that long.

Off topic but I don't care. How the fuck can a Total Recall remake kill it at the box office, while noone is supporting a remake of a masterpiece with Harrison fucking Ford?

It was me and two cute girls sitting alone in the theatre last night. Meanwhile pussies will pony up cash for Star Wars films with Jar Jar Binks.
Embarrassing! Maybe this is what Mighty Mouse feels like.

I'm with you brother. We live in strange times...

Total Recall remake was complete garbage, didnt watch new Blade Runner

One starred Arnie and had a triple-tittied chick, plus directed by Verhoeven.
It was a hit.
Blade Runner is rather more obscure and did poorly at the box office and in reviews.

No subforum for films?
Anyways, I'm going to see it, just not in the theater where I can't drink or smoke, or pause it to go to the restroom or somethin if I feel like it. Was it good or another mediocre remake?

didn't even know there was a remake

It's not a remake. It's a sequel.

I also don't remember the Total Recall remake "killing it" at the BO.

I really like Dick. lol. know that sounds bad. But other than Stephen King, no other author has had as many quality movies based on their books. I liked Minority Report. Even The Adjustmen Bureau. Not a classic but worth watching. Original Total Recall. I liked that.

King and Dick are competing right now. Looks like IT will win the war. Which was a shit movie. lol.

“The distinction between sanity and insanity is narrower than a razor’s edge, sharper than a hound’s tooth, more agile than a mule deer. It is more elusive than the merest phantom. Perhaps it does not even exist; perhaps it is a phantom. ”

I notice the budget is listed as $150 million, I didn't realise it was near to that high. You do need to remember that whilst the originals acclaim has beneen steady building for 20 years now its still not close to the level of something like Star Wars or indeed even Total Recall.

If word of mouth is strong of course the film might well have good legs plus I suspect it will be very well in Europe.

And even though the original has been getting more appreciation over the years, I believe it's the same small group praising it. Cinephiles.

If you show Blade Runner to an uninitiated general audience today, I'd imagine the reaction would be very similar to the lukewarm reception it initially got.

It's simply not for everyone. It's a very slow, cerebral film, that will only appeal to a certain demographic. It's like "2001" in that regard.

I thought this was a really enjoyable film. Loved the atmosphere of the movie, definitely don't regret spending the extra few dollars to see it in imax.

According to boxofficemojo this film isn't going to make that much money. It was originally expected to earn 45-50 million but now its predicted to earn south of 35 million. I wonder what happened? Maybe this generation really can't sit long enough without explosions every 5 minutes. Kinda why we get the movies we do. I've always said that people really don't waat these types of films, people continue to pay for the countless superhero movies and thats why we get so many. This wasn't a masterpiece to me but I was thrilled to get a big budget film that felt more artistic and not as dumb downed as the majority of blockbusters.

I think it would go down somewhat better than it did at the time when people were high on ET schmaltz and of course it wouldn't have the goofy Ford narration but as you say would also be hitting the same fundamental issue, its just not a typical blockbuster but rather an artier scifi drama.

I do think there is sometimes a tendancy for Hollywood to overestimate the pull of something that's popular within the industry and with online cinephiles. Other recent examples for me would be Tron Legacy and Ghost in the Shell, neither nearly as popular with mainstream US audiences as I think studios believed and weren't that successful overall dispite actually being good films in there own right IMHO.

I thought the budget for this film would be more in the $50-80 million range, at $150 million it might be a bit more touch and go whether it gets into serious profit. In its favour though it does seem a more conventional film than the original, indeed I spose the high budget might well explain that.
