Just came back from seeing it. Solid movie, don't really have any complaints. It's good they took time to tell the story. Not sure if i would watch it again though.

BLACK PANTHER Scores $65.7M in 3rd Weekend, Passes $500M in North America

Movies from Jennifer Lawrence and Bruce Willis were no match for Disney and Marvel's Black Panther, which amassed another $65.7 million in its third outing to leap past the $500 million mark in North America and earn nearly $900 million worldwide.

Black Panther — now the 10th biggest pic of all time domestically, not adjusted for inflation — nabbed the third biggest weekend in history behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($90.2 million) and Avatar ($68.5 million) after passing Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459 million) to become the second biggest Marvel title of all time in North America behind The Avengers ($623 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Overseas, the superhero tentpole earned another $56.2 million for a foreign tally of $396.6 million and global haul of $897.8 million.

Two new films opened opposite Black Panther — Red Sparrow, an action-thriller starring Lawrence, and Willis' Death Wish remake.

From Fox and Chernin Entertainment, Red Sparrow beat Death Wish with an estimated $17 million from 3,056 theaters. The action thriller reunites Lawrence with her Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence, and debuted to more than double what her last film, mother!, made in its first weekend. It also opened ahead of Lawrence's Passengers ($14 million).

Death Wish, a remake of the 1974 revenge thriller, opened to an estimated $13 million from 2,847 locations. In the film, Willis stars as a doctor who takes the law into his own hands after an attack on his wife and daughter. The cast also includes Elisabeth Shue, Vincent D'Onofrio, Camila Morrone, Dean Norris and Mike Epps.

Damn, son. Looks like it will pass Avengers in US. It's about 45M ahead at current pace.
Will crack a billion by next Sunday.

Opens in China next week. Interesting to see how this film does there. The Chinese movie Market is massive and is a few years from surpassing the US market as far as individual countries go. Some franchises have done well there ( The MCU and Fast Franchise) others not so much ( Star Wars isn't interesting to the Chinese Market).

I'm stunned with how well this movie has done in the BO. I thought it was a good not great movie.

Marvel Movie with Controversy on both sides of the political spectrum ( Even though it's social commentary was safe)

It just generated buzz and rode the wave. I'm impressed with it's staying power . A couple of years ago 500 mil worldwide for a character like Black Panther would have been stellar. Marvel must be extremely happy with this result.

Agreed. Gave it a 6.

I forget about it completely until this thread pops up.

Oh wait, I did talk about it recently because my friend said the woman, the real star, is fucking Michonne from walking dead?!?!?! No wonder why she was fantastic.

Like I said before, the general and the sister were more entertaining in a super hero movie and they don't have any super powers. What's that tell you about how it compares to other super hero movies?

This makes me wonder how much Infinity War is gonna make.

I have to guess that IW will do massive numbers. All the fan favorites in one film.

The tattoos the War Dogs have on the inside of their lips; was that a homage to Blade II?;)

You would think. I suspect a slight drop off from those that saw BP for strictly cultural reasons.

I hope there is still all this new found love when Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse comes out and introduces Miles Morales.

I think they'll use spider man to bring in the Xmen. I would love to see Kitty and Peter Parker as love interest in the movies.

Massive market for their own films but they don't let much of the money their people spend on movies leave the country.

It's a bit unclear exactly how much a Foregin Movie makes in China actually keeps because China will China. Black Panther could post a respectable number and it would just go down as part of the bottom line but wouldn't really reflect the actual profit.

A friend who I'm renting a room from was one of the top people in the finance department for a big studio before a Chinese company ate them a few years ago. Wasn't long till they were out of work but over St Patrick Day dinner last year when they were still employed everyone at the table was told that the deal went down because the higher ups were hoping to get a higher % of box office returns (20-25% being the usual).

SPOILER! They did not, all that happened was China got more American jobs.

My impression :
Good, but I kept waiting for it to turn into something beyond standard comic hero action schlock.
I believe it may have been muddy a weeeeeeeeee little bit overhyped.
Just by a jot.

I suppose it depends on if it's good or not. Word of mouth killed off Age of Ultron's momentum. I had so many of my friends say it was average I almost didn't want to go and watch it at the cinema.

T'Chaka should be a candidate for Avengers Forever.

I didn't think Killmonger was the best Marvel villain like everyone was saying. Michael B Jordan was very charismatic and I like Sterling Brown as the dad (their spirit realm scene was maybe my favorite scene), but he was also pretty hokey.

Marvel's BLACK PANTHER Crosses the $1 Billion Mark Worldwide

tDlSjGA.jpg

Ryan Coogler's Black Panther has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming the 33rd film to join the elite club and the 16th Disney title to do so, not adjusted for inflation.

Black Panther, which cost $200 million to make before marketing, was a bold move on the part of Disney and Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige.

Black Panther sprang to the top of the Chinese box office Friday, approaching a sleek $20 million by the early evening of its first day of release in the film’s last major market.

The movie’s strong performance as it heads into multiplexes in China should help allay fears that Chinese audiences are cool towards black-themed movies.

By midday Friday in China, the Disney-Marvel Comic Universe film had grossed $9.87 million (RMB62.7 million), according to data from China Box Office. That climbed to $18 million (RMB115 million) by 7 p.m. At that point, Black Panther accounted for 57% of Friday’s gross revenues, ahead of big-budget patriotic documentary Amazing China, which came in second place with 19%. Last week’s dominant title, Operation Red Sea, eased down to third place with 8%.

Previews and midnight screenings for Black Panther were worth $1.45 million (RMB9.2 million) on Thursday, elevating the film’s running total to $19.5 million (RMB124 million) by 7 p.m. in China.

China is a notoriously tricky theatrical market to predict. Audience tastes are changing rapidly and can vary between the big metropolises and the smaller towns, where local Chinese fare tends to dominate. Black Panther is also the first substantial Hollywood title to release since Chinese New Year in February and the end of the unofficial blackout period during which local films are given distribution priority.

The early numbers reinforce predictions that Black Panther could enjoy a $60 million opening weekend in China and go on to exceed $100 million. The movie had already achieved high interest levels on popular consumer film site Maoyan, pointing to it being regarded as simply another Marvel superhero title, rather than a difficult-to-sell specialty film.
