is it wrong for me to feel a little pissed off that this movie is undoubtly getting alot of attention and hype because of political and social/ racial issues? i had a bad feeling this would be the case before the movie was released but didnt realize how much it would bother me.
I love comics, and i love comic book movies, even the bad ones. ive seen them all even when i knew they were going to be bad. and i take them for what they are entertainment. case in point i knew punisher war zone was going to be pretty horrible just from the trailers... and it was... but i actually enjoyed it for what it was. I loved the action and violence in the opening portion of the film. not a ton of substance but it gave me some joy watching the punisher do his thing.
i feel like outsiders and non fans are jumping on board and boasting black panther for the wrong reasons. i mean... i just cant really get behind the whole " its more than a movie" thing.
its like the black panther got hijacked and turned into a political symbol. is that a good thing? im not sure.
i get that people take away from a film all sorts of things and thats great im not saying its wrong for people to feel something special about it or any other movie for that matter. but at least be honest about the movie and the history of these movies.
i get that its a landmark for movie making and having a majority black cast and all. and thats great. but lets be honest here. a 98% before it was even released? its the lion king with over done cg... and the lion king was based on hamlet.. the writing is not terrible. but it sure as hell wasent all that original thats for sure.

i guess i just feel like my precious comic book movies became a victim of their own success in that it got tied in with some political issues that i feel do a disservice to the film itself, and the whole " comic book movie" genre as a whole.
i guess its a good thing that the masses are getting behind it in the long run. lets just hope they continue to support other " nerdy" things regardless of the skin color of the cast.
i know , i know. i sound like hitler right now.

that being said i didnt hate the movie. but im starting to hate the hype. i figured it out the other day. its fringe top 10 ranking for MCU movies, not even top 25 in comic book movies as a whole. but thats just me and my silly rankings.

You have a point. This movie is definitely getting a boost from casuals seeing it for reasons not relating to love of comic books. The argument about GOAT MCU would be more valid if the demographics were the same across all films.

Update: February 25, 2018

Marvel's BLACK PANTHER Scores Record $108 Million in Second Weekend

8vMJN3A.jpg

Ryan Coogler's groundbreaking superhero pic Black Panthercontinued to defy all expectations in its sophomore outing, grossing an estimated $108 million from 4,020 theaters to score the top second weekend of all time behind Star Wars: Force Awakens.

The Disney and Marvel title hit the $400 million mark domestically in only 10 days after dropping a narrow 47 percent in its second weekend. That's one of the lowest declines ever for a superhero title, as well as one of the lowest for a film launching north of $200 million (the bigger the opening, the bigger the drop in many instances). Thanks to Black Panther, domestic revenue year to date is now up a dazzling 12.5 percent over the same period in 2017 after running behind by more than 1 percent two weeks ago, according to comScore.

Overseas, Black Panther earned $83.8 million for an international tally of $304 million and global haul of $704 million, including $50 million for Imax theaters. It has yet to open in Russia, Japan and China.

In North America, Black Panther — becoming the fourth movie to cross $100 million in its second weekend — earned more in its second outing than a number of 2017 tentpoles did in their first weekend, including Wonder Woman ($103.3 million), Justice League ($93 million) and The Fast and the Furious ($98.8 million). And it ties with Jurassic World in reaching $400 million faster than any film in history behind Force Awakens.

Another accomplishment: Black Panther is already the top-grossing February of all time domestically — Deadpool was the previous best with $363.1 million — and is on the verge of becoming the No. 3 MCU title of all time in the U.S. as it prepares to pass up Captain America: Civil War ($408 million) and Iron Man 3 ($409 million) in the next few days. And it will soon growl past Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459 million) on its way to potentially eclipsing The Avengers ($623.4 million) to become the No. 1 superhero title of all time, unadjusted for inflation.

Force Awakens is the champ in terms of biggest second weekend domestically with $149.2 million, not accounting for inflation. Other films high up on the list include Jurassic World ($106.6 million) and fellow MCU title The Avengers ($103.1 million).

Weekend Box Office: Marvel's 'Black Panther' Scores Record $108 Million in Second Outing
Update: Actual numbers are slightly higher with $111.7 million for BP's second weekend.

@Myrddin Wild - Which means Black Panther is the highest grossing domestic movie of all time(!)... behind 25 other movies. And BP is the all-time worldwide box office champion, excluding the other 100 movies that are ahead of it.

Again with this "Top second weekend of all time" only to be followed by "oh yeah, but Star Wars beat it." Did the same thing on opening weekend.

lol... I think brother Dragon has been gotten too @One MMA Fan @EvilDDS @Clippy

Why doesn't he just say "Black Panther takes the number 2 slot for the highest second weekend of all time?" Is Dragon a Black Panther shill? A Star Wars resistor? <Eek2.0>

:D:p:D

yea, I'm sorry.
if this is what passes for 5 star rated films now, I'm out.

RIP cinema

and society will go down the shitter even faster with all the drones and cyborgs like them paying 20 bucks to watch idiotic CGI with no plot, characterization or intelligence.
RIP society.

WW was better imo. The epic cgi battle against the librarian was really bad though

Hahah. Well said.

I thought BP had better characters overall.

Wonder Woman was the Gadot/Pine Show.

I like danny Huston generally but General Red Herring was subpar and Dr. Death or whatever her name was was good but more of a supporting character. Thewlis is a legit actor but felt like Ares’ over the top pontificating “Then I will destroyyyyy youuuu” was not my thing.

I really did like Pine’s friends but they didn’t seem nearly as fleshed out or badass to me as Lupita, Leticia, Gurira,
Winston Duke, etc.

And better villain goes to Black Panther in my opinion. Jordan was far more interesting than Ares.

Chadwick is just a real likable, relatable dude. Thought he was great in Civil War and kept it going in this one.

I know you didn’t like BP, man, but I thought it surpassed Wonder Woman in certain criteria.

I pretty much agree with everything here, other than how much we enjoyed BP.

And sure Killmonger is the better villain than Ares, but as good as KM's story is, the advantage lies in the casting. A better actor for Ares and the difference isn't so obvious. And while the supporting characters may have been better fleshed out overall, Chris Pine was more fleshed out than any BP characters other than Klaw and N'jobu (thats including T'Challa).

WW vs BP is close for me, which shouldn't be a case for a movie that made nearly $500M in Feb...

I'd like to add that, imo, the BP cast is one of the best ensembles we've had in these comic movies (maybe the best outside of Civil War). I'm a fan of just about everybody with a speaking part in the movie (except BP's fairweather friend; never liked that guy). This is actually part of the problem for me and makes it even more tragic, imo. They obviously had a million ideas and actors they wanted to include that they didn't have the discipline to shelve any of it for a sequel, and that hurt the story and the characters for me.

Definitely makes a lot of sense. Well said.

Pine was damn good. Dynamic between him and Diana was very well done.

Do you just not like Kaluuyas character in this or just not like Kaluuya? I forget your thoughts on Get Out (I want to say you thought it was real overrated but I can’t recall lol- opinions on it just blurring together in my mind). To me he didn’t have much to do in BP but I thought he killed it in Get Out and was a very likable character.

Dude was also in awesome movie Sicario, though, again, more of a thankless role.

I loved Get Out and Sicario, but he's just too blah. GO & Sicario weren't terrible roles for that style, but I never got African Warlord from this guy in BP.

Oh here we go... from one old man to another.

Lighten up Francis

It’s a fun movie that just happens to have extra appeal to a certain demographic.

I mean I agree, I was cringing inside as GMA was referring to Black Panther as a cultural icon and phenomena, on par with MLK or something.

But it seems like black kids (and families) all across the world are excited to have superhero they can call their own and there are people like me who are happy to them so excited about it.

Therefore, it’s getting a lot more attention and credit than other similar movies, like Spider-Man Homecoming. Which I happen to think was a better movie. But I can understand what’s going and not get rustled about it.

Haha... you're a good sport bro... That's hilarious!!

I was undecided about seeing this movie. On the one hand I'm a hard core MCU fan. On the other, I'm extremely racist. Eventually I compromised by wearing my Hydra t-shirt and cheering every time Klaue came on screen:D

Joking aside, this was a good but not great film. I rate it higher than average, for example AoU, IM2 & 3, Ant Man etc. But for me it didn't reach the high-water mark set by Civil War, Winter Soldier and Iron Man.

Casting has always been Marvel's strong point. Boseman is as perfect a fit for Black Panther as RDJ is for Stark or Evans for Rogers. His T'Challa is a genuinely good man who nevertheless must balance his desire to help people with his duty to protect Wakanda.

Jordon makes an excellent Big Bad. I'm the least guilty White man you could ever meet, but even I could understand his anger and frustration. The kid is seriously Jacked, and the kill scars all over his body were a nice touch:eek:

Serkis is obviously enjoying himself immensely in a role where it's actually his face and body on screen. He pretty much stole every scene he was in.

The rest of the supporting cast was fine. It was a strong ensemble cast, and I didn't really see any weak links. Bonus points for M'Baku.

"If you speak another word, I will have you fed to my children!

Just joking, we're vegetarian"
.<45>

Wakanda looked cool as fuck. Most of the CGI was on-point, although I thought the armoured Rhinos were a bit much. I also wasn't that impressed with the fight scenes. Especially the first one; it was so dark I had trouble following it at times. Panther looked more dangerous in his Civil War fights.

7.5/10 for me.

to be honest, you're right. we're living in idiocracy.

Also, has the USAF cut a sponsorship deal with the MCU? At least four characters - Ross, War Machine, Falcon and Captain Marvel are Air Force veterans;)

Michael B. Jordan was not good. The acting wasn't very good, or maybe I just can't take him seriously as a ruthless villain type. A low point of the film for me. The first half was better than the second half.

Agreed on M'Baku... He's a cool character who I didn't know anything about...

And that was Andy Serkis?? I honestly didn't put two and two together... lol, wow. I'm usually pretty good with faces and voices, but I missed that one completely. I should have seen it immediately.

From Gollum to an International Arms Smuggler... haha

If you read comic books, i don't know how you can say this.
There are Marvel and DC characters that are literally 50+ years old. Many stories told in comics are derived from real life events, themes, and people.
"Comic book movies " are not all just about tights, CGI, and Fast and the Furious style ridiculous action. They have stories with themes and lessons.
The Killmonger in the Black Panther comics has similar views to the ones shown in the movie.
Xmen was a story about racism and other forms of discrimination
Politics isn't a new thing in comics

People are being really tone deaf on why this movie is significant to many. There hasn't been a mostly black cast in a mainstream movie like this that has been this successful. It's a movie that shows blacks outside of the stereotypical roles people are used to seeing them in. It shouldn't be hard to understand why that means something to people, nor should it bother or offend you.
