News BKFC announces Ice Wars, an on-ice fight series without the hockey

First thing that comes to mind is someone is gonna get fucked up with the skates. You have two guys fighting and now they have blades for feet, what do you think is gonna happen? Someone is gonna crack their skull on the Ice. It would be like having a boxing ring with concrete as floor.

Could be wrong but I doubt most MMA fighters, bare knuckle brawlers, boxers go skating on their off days. How about just go ahead and make it like power slap but instead of slap just a haymaker to the chin and see who doesn't go into coma
But there are a shit load of enforcers in hockey. And they can throw down

Considering how long fighting had been in hockey (and still is), I'm amazed this doesn't really happen. It's a conundrum

I went to similar events back in the 90s but they stopped after public backlash, you could find VHS tapes of these kinds of fights in the same section of the video store where you could find boxing and mma tapes

All these gimmicky leagues but the one I really have been wanting to see for years is a striking league that is pretty much just MMA without the grappling. It would allow 8 point striking with bare feet and MMA gloves.

The dream would be that it would draw talent from kickboxing, MMA, boxing and be a meeting ground between them all, and take striking as overall art to the next level as the boxers learn to deal with leg strikes and small gloves, the kickboxers bring up their hands and deal with small gloves, and the MMA fighters bring up their overall skill, which is something that isn't happening right now. I think prime Conor would've done very well in a league like this.

The small gloves are just there to protect the hands and allow the fighters to punch harder, but to be less of an artificial impediment than big gloves to developing "real" unarmed/raw striking skill.

The problem with a league like this though is that it would require a lot more money and talent than Ice or Slap Fights.
I've only watched a couple of times but isn't Karate Combat close to this? It's not bad in terms of entertainment, I enjoyed the bit I saw.

You'd think so, but it really isn't a big deal. I have played and watched a ton of hockey in my life, and it's not something I've ever seen or heard of.

Skate incidents tend to happen more in hits, where your whole body is in motion and not the same way as throwing a punch.

All in all, this is dumb. Hockey fights are at their best when they are sparked from a different incident.

@ThaiSexPills, interesting stories and thanks for reminding me of Steve Bosse and the amazing head kick KO he was on the receiving end of from Thiago Silva

Personally I think hockey fights are one of the dumbest things in all of sports
No other pro team sport allows players to fight and just receive a minor few minutes penalty
If you want to fight, box or go to MMA
Imigaine if NFL or NBA allowed players to scrap it out, lol
Never been a fan of that shit

I honestly kind of want to try this. I was a scrapper in the QMJHL years ago and still occasionally get in one in senior hockey. Got in a few in the Quebec fight league (LNAH) too back in the day.

I genuinely wonder how I would do in something like this but my brain tells me no. It’s gonna be wild. If it was out east I’d be even more tempted. I bet you guys would love to watch me get annihilated.

Obviously no need to tell you... but scrapping on skates is way, way tougher than it looks.

My buddy's nephew played on the Mooseheads at the same time as Marchand. I hope you smacked Brad around a bit, dude's an asshole. I know Ryan was drafted by the Rangers, but never cracked the roster. Ended up trading his hockey skills for a free SMU education though.

This ought to be entertaining while it lasts.

I think a lot of the older veteran enforcers would have done well in the earlier UFC days. They have good balance, good power, don't care about teeth, and there was a better chance at success for one-dimensional fighters. Nowadays they wouldn't have more than a puncher's chance (and the ability to eat one).

What those guys lacked in grappling and wrestling skills, they made up for in chins.

Guys like Probert, Kordic, Parker, Kocur, Schulz, Ray, Twist, the Grim Reaper, Brashear, Laraque... they're just built different.

Came across this at a quick glance, but these guys took some serious damage over their careers. Surprisingly, a lot of the old goons still seem quite lucid in interviews.

If there going to do this. I hope most of the fights turn out like this.

Probably the best fight I've seen in the last 10 years.
