BJJ, Strength & Air Traffic Control

It was weird, it was like I just couldn't stop getting stronger on the press. I tried it for deadlift using singles for a little bit, and that seemed to be working too, until I exploded my back on a squat.

BJJ (gi)

Trained at the smaller place. Worked three back escapes and got a TON of reps in. Good stuff. Then did king of the mat guard passing; phew, this took a lot out of me. Slacked on the conditioning lately and it is showing. Went through a few white belts, got swept by a blue belt, and went with a big tall blue belt I'd never met before. To be honest, I think we both brought our A-games as two alpha gorillas in the wild would. Our aggression maybe was a bit much, because I accidentally hit him in the face with my foot at one point and he got a nose bleed. From my spider guard I jumped a triangle but he was so tall and postured so well there was no way, so I switched to the triangle-arm bar and got the tap. Tough matches all around tonight, definitely put out a lot of effort.

-Big squat PR! Felt great with it; used a narrower, more square stance and felt like quads were being engaged a lot more. Had more in the tank, too. Bet I could have gone up to 12 reps.

-Besides or after that, though, CNS felt destroyed. Went in feeling a little tired and weak, pulled out that PR then the rest of the workout felt exhausting and laborious. Cut out some reps and sets here and there, called it a day.

Impressive squatting. I did notice your training is lacking in the curl department though.

Notes

-Had a very weird tingling sensation in my left hip when doing BB shrugs. Almost as if someone were sticking a needle in me. It would come and go in-set, not sure what the fuck that is all about.
 
I've had similar things happen when shrugging but that's because my neck is screwed up. Probably some nerve pinching going on. Nice curling

Worked half guard passes to gift wrap attacks from side control; head/arm triangle, far side arm bar and kimura. Rolled with a variety of dudes; a big blue belt, a big big strong new guy, another big strong wrestler and a stout wrestler. Did well with everyone, didn't get tapped at all and tapped the big new guy with a triangle and the wrestler with a ton of shit. He was getting pissed off!

Our BB instructor asked what we wanted to work on and I told him some of my issues with finishing the darce. So our class was on darce attacks and defenses which was really great. Rolled with a few white belts that are getting their blues on Saturday; both of them are really solid grapplers with tight games. I choked the bigger one unconscious with my baseball bat choke. He was interested afterward so I walked him through it as I always do after putting someone to sleep with it.

Had sort of an epiphany last night when rolling. Instead of doing my usual one attack at a time, I decided to stay active without stopping. I was constantly attacking and moving, trying one thing on one side or corner of my opponent, ready for him to counter or block and then swing to the other side with a different attack, that also is ready to be switched to attack or sweep #3 to a different side or angle. I would just keep moving my hips and attacking arm bars, omoplatas, sweeps, chokes, whatever I could do to keep my opponent overwhelmed by attacks until I would get something.

Even if I wasn't constantly winning or tapping them, I was keeping them from being able to attack me at the least. I never really felt threatened or on defense in any of my matches because I was so busy attacking all the time. Or, like the old salesman adage, "Always be closing."

Can't believe it's taken me this long to move my game to this level. This is what I feel separates blues from purples from what I've seen, so I need to make this a permanent part of my game while also tightening up existing techniques.

-Fucked up the first set by misloading the bar on one side; took 2-3 reps before I stopped and then immediately went into the real working set without rest, so it was kind of a jacked up set.

-Nutrition was pretty great today-- ~3200 calories, had: 15oz red potatoes, 12oz pan-seared chicken breast, an entire vanilla protein cheesecake with sugar-free chocolate syrup, a big cup of fat-free tart yogurt with strawberries, bananas, graham cracker and cheesecake bites, a box of cheddar explosion Mac n' Cheese, a fat free Hebrew National hot dog and a bowl of cinnamon oats cereal

Trained at the smaller place. Went over basic stuff like double leg takedowns, jumping a triangle from guard and an omoplata. Worked guard passing live with a few white belts and a couple of blues; got a lot of work in and felt really gassed early on. Had good back and forths with the blues.

Fuck yeah man. Forgot to mention I make my Mac n' cheese with 1 cup of low fat cottage cheese and skim milk.

You think? I've also been getting this weird tingling sensation in my left leg/foot when rolling. Weird that both are on the left side of the body. You're probably right though about nerves being pinched or just fucked up.
