BJ Penn's biggest issue wasn't his work ethic

BJ Penn was a bad ass, it just depended on which BJ showed up. I will never forget the beatdown he put on Diego Sanchez.

is diego sanchez some goat? there is nothing impressive about that.
BJ Penn was talented, but he isn't some all time great. He shoudn't be in any conversations for top lists, he was a product of a shallow lightweight division, and had a mediocre career when put into perspective. He is the most overrated fighter in sherdog history.

It was impressive when it happened. This was before Diego went off the deep end and couldn't perform anymore.

He is one of the most talented and fearless fighters in the history of Earth.

BJ Penn has a record of 16 wins and 14 losses. The boxing community laughs that this is a guy considered to be MMA's lightweight division goat. Compare Penn to the GOATs of boxing in the same division.
The boxing community knows nothing about MMA or BJ's career, so they should stop embarrassing themselves with ignorant statements.

Ben Askren will probably hold that title forever.

How are they embarrassing themselves? They've been kicking our ass for a while now.

As great as BJ was, that doesn't mean there wasn't room to be even better. Remember the old saying: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. That kind of encompasses the second half of BJ's career. Other fighters put the work in that BJ stopped putting in.

It's that he mistakenly thought he could be at his very best without taking steroids like everyone else.

That's why I never view his career as a disappointment the way so many do. What he was able to accomplish as a clean fighter was astonishing. His natural gifts were second to none.

But if he had decided to take the Jon Jones, Anderson Silva route, etc., then there's no doubt in my mind that we would be talking about him as a top 3 atg.

But even still, 2 division champ is nothing to sneeze at when you did it with an estrogen filled dad bod.

Completely wrong. His work ethic was.

The boxing community manufactures its stars. Who gives a shit what each community thinks of the other.

BJ Penn had no interest in padding his record with cans and literally wanted to fight everyone on the planet on beer and hot dogs and without steroids. He was a victim of his own greatness.

GOAT.

Not sure what "kicking ass" even has to do with it, unless you are just trying to hug their nuts; you could say that about any group of fighters. I already said how they were embarrassing themselves.

The "padding" and "nobodies" is literally when they are starting out so don't bring that argument here. You realize his actual UFC record is 6-1-12 right? You won't find another lightweight goat boxer that has that record even after removing the "padding".

I like both boxing and mma but you have to admit this being our Lightweight goat is embarrassing.
I won't find any GOAT boxer that was fighting at the top of boxing in their first boxing matches, you're right. Boxing in general is embarrassing.

Used to be great. Now it is trash

How do you think he'd do in his prime against the top LWs of today?

The HW boxing champ got tooled by a debuting boxer who came from MMA. Needed to cheat and still didn't even hurt the debuting boxer even a little bit.

Boxing has done nothing but embarrass itself with those fights

You either get BJ or you don't. He's one of the greats. Dude never wanted easy fights, was always game to fight fighters that are favored to beat him. You got fighters like Jon Jones ducking Tom Aspinall and then you got fighters like BJ always wanting fights with GSP, John Fitch, Rory Mcdonald, etc.

Imagine being a 2 division champion and a Bjj world champion and people consider you a disappointment
Bro just one more defense bro please bro just take PEDs bro you’ll truly beat Khabib then bro please (BJ is best lightweight ever to me)

Diego was top 5 in the world at 21-2 at the time and even has a win over good old Nick Diaz at WW. Sure LW was a thin division compared to modern MMA but it's a very solid win.

Regardless people rank BJ high because he's a LW that smoked Matt Hughes at WW in his prime and Hughes as a god in that era. That wasn't some over the hill Hughes. BJ also fucked up GSP in their first fight pretty good despite losing split decision. Pretty impressive shit for a LW fighter to take on two WW goats.

Awful take. Dude truly was a prodigy. Natural gifts that rivaled most everybody. His work ethic shortcomings are well known.
