Bizarre Cases of the missing and murdered

At least 15 people were 'disappeared' by the IRA during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Some of them are still missing. The most recent search was for the remains of 19-year-old Columba McVeigh who was disappeared in 1975. A specialist forensic team spent five months in 2013 digging in a bog in County Monaghan, but found nothing. The film highlights the powerful story of the life and harrowing death of widow and mother-of-ten Jean McConville. She was dragged from the arms of her young children by an IRA gang in 1972, then shot and buried. Her body was finally recovered in 2003. Michael McConville explains how at 11 years of age he was tied up and beaten when he threatened to tell police about what had happened. His sister Agnes recalls the abuse they got from other children afterwards, before the siblings were shipped off to various orphanages. The IRA policy of disappearing victims dates back to 1972 when four people were taken from Belfast. It is said to have ended in 1981 after an order from the IRA's governing Army Council. A policy of lies and intimidation appears to have run in parallel with the policy of disappearing people. One family after another explain how they were virtually silenced by a climate of fear. They also had to cope with rumours claiming their loved one was alive and well. The evidence suggests these rumours were invented by the IRA to keep the families away from the truth. A forensic detective outlines the mechanics of the killings and burials. He tells how most of the victims were shot once in the back of the head and then dumped in shallow graves. In some cases the bodies were weighted down with stones in case they rose to the surface if the bog dried out. Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams is challenged about allegations that he ordered the disappearance of Jean McConville. Adams, today a member of the Irish parliament, is also probed about his knowledge of the fate of two IRA men who were disappeared in the same way that same year.

Say Nothing covers a lot of this as well. One of the best books I’ve read in recent memory.

In the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, a 7-year old boy was trapped in a car under the body of his deceased mother. In order to rescue him, first responders had to dismember his mother’s body, and then amputate the boy’s leg (13:44 mark)

Fuck me, you're gonna need a lifetime of therapy to recover from that experience.

There is a lot to question about the wild theories raised on Paramount Network’s new true crime series, It Was Him: The Many Murders of Ed Edwards, but let’s get one thing straight – the sincerity of the man behind them, John A. Cameron, isn’t one of them.

For the last eight years, Cameron, a retired cold case detective, has sought to prove that Edward Wayne Edwards was the most prolific serial killer the world has never heard of. He believes that Edwards committed upwards of a hundred murders, killing some of the most famous victims of the last 70 years: JonBenet Ramsey; Laci Peterson; Teresa Halbach (Making a Murderer); Adam Walsh (son of America’s Most Wanted‘s John Walsh); Chandra Levy; Jimmy Hoffa; Martha Moxley; Steve Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers (of the West Memphis Three case); and the Black Dahlia. Cameron also believes Edwards was the Zodiac Killer, who terrorized the Bay Area in the late 1960s, and that he is responsible for the “Atlanta Child Murders.”

have you ever heard interviews with this guy? He’s so far beyond rational thinking I almost feel sorry for him. When other true crime enthusiasts ask him the most basic questions, he gets really flustered and angry. I’m shocked Rolling Stone did a piece on him.

Barry Sherman and Honey Sherman.

This has had me mind boggled for years now. How do you enter a legitimate multi billionaire's home and kill him and his wife like that without getting caught on any cctv, etc? No shred of evidence? Help didn't see anything?

They still haven't arrested anyone after 4 years.

It takes pure evil individuals to do such cruel things to other human beings. Those boys were experimenting torture methods on that poor girl. I feel so bad for her and her family.

I have seen the Elisa Lam video before. This is one of those incidents we will likely never know what really happened. I believe it sounds like a homicide, although the hotel's history makes for an even creepier story. The point of an autopsy revealing no drugs in her body seems arbitrary anyway since she was stuck in a water tank.
they just did a doc on netflix about Lam. Metally ill and off her medication. Family said the vids of her in hotel are what happens when she is off medication. The big sticker was people say the cover on water tank was shut when they found her but the police report says it was open. Apparently she would "hide" when she thought people were following her. They believe she crawled in there on her own. The family filed a law suit saying the door to roof shouild have been locked but have never questioned it being an accident due to them knowing her. Im a case manager for the mentally ill here in R.I. for lifespan health, the video doesnt surprise me at all. Just had a client picked up by the police as she was running down the street due to being chased by vampires, true story

Yeah, I agree completely with that first sentence. But most sociopaths, even more psychopaths, aren't exactly wild beasts foaming at the mouth whose every action is some kind of risk. A sociopathic perspective is kind of conducive to success in life, it just makes you an asshole. My old boss was, without a doubt, a sociopath. And he was just an inconsiderate, unfeeling, self-centered prick. It contributed to his success, and aside from an entire office full of people daydreaming about braining him with a three-hole-punch, I don't think it endangered his life. From what I've read, most sociopaths are more Dick Brandenstein and less Ted Bundy.
the ted bundys are sociopaths with psychopathic behaviors or strait psychopaths. Most serial killers are psychopaths due to the ability to mask the intent. Sociopaths are more prone to fly off the handle, very obvious they dont care etc... Psychopaths can maintain "normalcy" while killing and can fake caring to fly under the radar. Sociopaths do have a very small ability to have remorse or empathy, when doing something wrong they will just rationalize the behavior were psychopaths have NO ability for remorse or empathy.

The Los Angeles Police Department said they found the elderly man with "numerous contusions and lacerations" at an address in Encino at around 12:50 p.m on Thursday, March 18.

Police were previously called at around 11:40 a.m. to reports of an armed man, Officer Drake Madison told KTLA. Officers later found a 34-year-old man with a minor laceration to his arm.

More than an hour later, police were called to another report of a man armed with a hatchet. The 102-year-old man, identified by his family as Youssef Mahboubian, was then found inside his home in the 17700 block of Alonzo Place in Encino.

Mahboubian's grandson, Jason Shakib, told ABC 7: "My wife is horrified to hear he was murdered by some axe-wielding psychopath.
[....]
"I just thought he slipped and fell because he was an older man. I had no idea there was a guy with a machete running around killing people."
[....]
Speaking to KTLA, Shakib added: "He came to this country from Iran decades and decades ago and they've been living peacefully at Alonzo Place for 30 years."

Police have arrested 47-year-old Adam Dimmerman on suspicion of the murder of the 102-year-old, as well as the attack on the 34-year-old. After he was taken into custody without further incident, officers recovered an axe and a knife from the scene.

Dimmerman is being held on a $2 million bail.
