Stipe DID apply a submission (RNC) in the second. Unfortunately it was at the very end of the round and the horn blew soon afterward.

It's not that Stipe doesn't know how to submit people. It's that he takes the old adage "position over submission" very much to heart. And even an exhausted Ngannou seems to keep a core of strength about him that makes him a handful to control.

i get that, i'm just saying there were opportunities for a finish and Stipe was ok with holding position. it's like his fights with DC. the fights could've been so much easier for Stipe if he could kick. i'm not saying he doesn't know how to kick, but he doesn't use it enough, same with submissions.

He leg kicks a fair amount. But if you're talking about anything much higher...let's just say his body isn't really built for that. Long torso, short legs. You want to see what he looks like head-kicking, watch the Overeem fight, where the Reem is jogging away before he knocks Stipe down. It's comical how he has to bend backwards to aim that high.

Possibly. But a title fight isn't a place to experiment, really. I wouldn't be surprised if after the Overeem business he said to himself "well I ain't trying THAT again".

That was publicly his nastiest loss.

The way he closed out his career was underrated.

Capping it with avenging the Roy loss and going on a 10 fight win streak was a good send off.
