Best American Muscle Car?

First gen GTO.
gto_1969_judge_mecum_101.ashx

As for modern, probably the Chevy SS.

It's ugly but it ticks all the right boxes. The Challenger and Charger look better but they're shit cars. The Camaro and Mustang are too small to be considered muscle cars. The Australians have been building better muscle cars for a while though that SS was probably the last generation.

But from a purist standpoint, the only true muscle cars today in spirit are the Challenger and AMG's coupes.

That’s definitely a 2nd gen gto. The 64-67s were first gen. The gto is the Greatest car of all time IMO.

1996 Chevy Impala 454 SS is a dream car of mine.

I think Chrysler Corp. made some of the looking
American cars of all time.

Wow great photos and responses guys. Sometimes seeing these classic muscle cars makes you wish you had the money to buy them all like Jay Leno and his huge airplane hangars filled with classic muscle cars.

Yes but I think Jay is more into the early 1900's vehicles like Model-A/T and car with steam engines etc. although he has some very cool modern cars and new sports cars.

The crazy thing is he said he doesn't spend any money he made from doing the Tonight Show and everything he owns he paid for with the money he made doing stand-up comedy.

GTX is so underrated. Fell in love with that car as a kid with Tommy Boy

Heartbreaking to see it get destroyed. I still laugh when the M&Ms go in the dash though

Like this car because how odd it is, its like a middle finger to the scene.

Its a 80s car .
Its turbo V6 (not a giant NA big block) V8.
Its from Buick (not chevy, pontiac or even Ford), the brand that mades cars for old people .
Its a luxury model.
Engine Tuned by a euro company McClaren.
Faster than the competition of his time.

Those came stock with forged internals too. There’s guys out there making 1000+ hp with those cars. The GN is a nasty car.. there’s a turbo charged TA out there from that era too that can get insane numbers..

The 66 L 72 Biscayne is one of my all time favorites..

No offense.. but a properly tuned Hemi Dart with someone that is savy should blow the doors off a 427 Chevelle unless some work was done to the Chevy.. this goes double for the track.

And I’m an old school GM guy for what it’s worth.. owned plenty of them and currently have a 70 SS Chevelle in my stable. I’ve only seen Hemi Darts at the tracks and in car shows tho (and lord only knows what else has been done to some of those over the years by time I was laying eyes on them).

Same goes for the 64 ‘Bolts. Only really seen them at the strip and I’ve seen them get handled by Hemis and so on.. @jefferz
By the time I was old enough to remeber riding around in ours, my dad had done quite a bit of work to it, but nothing too crazy.
Our track car was a 68 camaro with a wicked small block at the time.
It ran consistently in the high 9’s.

The chevelle was a high 11 sec car at the track

The dart we raced had a hemi, but don’t think it was a factory hemi dart
