AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY and AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Delays Release Date from May to December

Marvel Studio’s marquee team of heroes need a bit more time to reassemble. Avengers: Doomsday is pushing back its release date in theaters from May 1, 2026, to Dec. 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars will now open on Dec. 17, 2027 instead of May 7, 2027.

Disney, however, isn’t giving up the coveted start-of-summer-slot in 2026 and has set 20th Century’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 to take Doomsday‘s date and open on May 1.

During a nearly five-and-a-half hour livestream in late March, Marvel Studios began unveiling its cast for Avengers: Doomsday, revealing a mix of Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstays as well as actors from 20th Century Fox’s now-defunct X-Men universe and upcoming stars of Fantastic Four: First Steps. Notable names missing from the roll call included Tom Holland (Spider-Man) and Chris Evans (Captain America), the latter of whom is expected to appear at least one of the two-part movies.

Additionally, a number of characters from Thunderbolts* will also be featured in the upcoming Avengers movies.

Insiders say Doomsday and Secret Wars are two of the biggest titles Marvel has ever made, and the date shifts help the production schedules (Doomsday is shooting). Marvel has learned the hard way that can happen when rushing things.

The December date has been kind to Marvel; that’s when Sony’s blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home debuted.

This is a smart move
It's a smart move but it's also an indication that Marvel Studios' heyday is over (for now?) and they can't just rely on putting anything on the first week of May and have people show up. With the December move, they're trying to hedge their success rate by combining it with the Christmas holiday which is very good at the box office.

I don't know if I agree with the heyday part. I think they are suffering from past decisions including railroading their biggest properties. This gives them time to make a better set of movies, imo. Fits with their current strategy of focusing on quality.

You're likely very right about the date. Wasn't Avatar a December release?

Yes, the Avatar movies were December releases. The new Star Wars trilogy, Rogue One, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Aquaman were also released near Christmas and all earned $1 billion at the box office globally.

I also agree that May 2026 is too close of a release since they're still shooting Doomsday and Secret Wars currently in London.

I don't think these 2 films and any other that relies on the cameo/guest star/multiverse fest is in trouble (for now). Its the smaller films the ones that actually get hurt by the use of that formula.

Like I heard the new Spider-man film will also use the multiverse, feel like audiences will not go back to a small Spider vs Scorpion type film. After the 2 avengers films many people will feel like there is nothing more to look forward in the MCU.

Chris Hemsworth posted on YouTube a tribute video celebrating Thor's legacy in the MCU.

Hemsworth: "Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I've held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable.. Next up, Doomsday!"

Did they explain why RDJ is coming back as Doom?
