Are pushups any good ? or not worth doing

you can always add weighted vest + people sit on you.. get weighted push up + balance lol

True. Most weight sets are cheaper than those vests, but they're useful if you intend on being a firefighter... :icon_chee

Although you could use it for quick training at the house: Lunges, push ups, squats, sit ups, etc..

I'd just wear it around all day. Get groceries and shit with it (literally or figuratively). I'd recommend taking it off while swimming though... although I'd be impressed to see some dude doing laps in the pool with 150lb vest on.

Very impressed...

You're on a fucking roll today, aren't you?

It doesn't do anything for strength? Do some research on tempo training. You can gain more functional, and core strength from pushups alone than you can using gym equipment. Go to a gym seek out a highly skilled trainer, preferably one with a NASM certification, you can learn alot in a few sessions, a great investment.

I saw this earlier, but never got a chance to respond. Do I think BW pushups have much use for strength? No. The load is far too light. I guess I shouldn't have said "anything", as I could see some people getting a bit of benefit. My point is that you have to add weight, which gets a bit difficult.

I really don't want to debate this further, as you've shown your knowledge with the statement, "You can gain more functional, and core strength from pushups alone than you can using gym equipment." Are you fucking serious?

It's also totally badass to just rep out a bunch of one handed pushups.

pushups have been one of the most popular exercises for over a thousand years. Sure barbell movements are probably best for your goals, but pushups are definately worth doing. Great for muscle endurance and conditioning.

This is totally true, here a guy who trains nothing but pushups:

It's true, look it up...

you should prove it to me.. Even a link to wikipedia would be nice. Is that pudz (that strongman competitor who had the mma debut in Poland a while back)? You should have posted a picture of Herschel Walker.

Oblivian, that's you told huh? Powerlifters aren't functional mang :D I would like to add another version for consideration - TRX or blast strap pushups are pretty ace and plenty adaptible. Elevated, weight vest etc all apply again.

Won't make you bench 1000lbs, but something to throw in the mix now and again.

Think he just does Hot Yoga I believe. It's not like other versions - much more intense.

Push ups and it's variations are the best P4P upper body body excercises there are. If anyone has any info studies proving otherwise, then please.

^^^ right... How about you do some research yourself? Why don't you find us an article that supports your position, and then I'm sure we can dig up several hundred articles that say differently.

That was not your argument. Nor is what you said true. So you take several months to do as many pushups as you want, and then see if your 'core' can handle a several hundred pound deadlift for multiple repetitions...

First off, that wasn't your argument as EndoGlo said. Second, BW pushups aren't going to do much for strength gains. Muscle endurance yes, conditioning you could make an argument for. I'm curious as to how you think they will result in great strength gains when the load is so low and you are working in very high rep ranges.

Where's the graph of the rep ranges vs effectiveness?

Yeah, 5x5 push ups ftw!

Pushups are great for warm up and recovery. One hand knuckle pushups are a great core exercise.
