Are Americans falling behind in MMA?

Not open for further replies.
An entire country is falling behind in a sport, because they don't have free gyms.

Fucking lol

Yeah except we have free basketball soccer and football all over the entire nation and we seem to do pretty good with that...

You're probably not old enough to remember when they used to have Combat Sports at the Boys & Girls Clubs and high schools

Back then Americans could fight and it showed because we did better at the Olympics

Today we're getting our asses kicked at a sport we invented and none of you dumbass even notices cuz your too worried about Brock Lesnar new tattoo LOL

No. The US is doing pretty well in MMA.
There are a few reasons why bjj is a big success:
- it is effective as self defense
- it is super fun
- grappling training is less scary than striking for most people
- you don't need to be an athlete to train and to learn enough to be confident you can defend yourself. Wrestling shares the other characteristics, but I believe it demands more athleticism, which is not good for people who only have 3 or 4 hours a week to practice.

If you take the greater sample... the big math into consideration Americans are not doing very well in MMA and doing absolutely terribly in Combat Sports overall

really good point on the BJJ situation though I think you nailed it right on the head

BJJ is a pretty tough art and translates okay into MMA with some major modifications of course

I wonder what would happen if the poor people in this country had a chance to learn high quality Brazilian jiu-jitsu....

think we'd have more MMA champions???

This country spends millions of dollars to allow poorer people access to football basketball and soccer even swimming while martial arts are practically banned from public parks

13 pages and the TS was fielding posts the whole way. I don't agree with you at all but that is impressive for sherdog.

<mma4>

It's almost like I have some kind of personal investment in the topic

That's a funny cartoon

Same thing happened to boxing when all the Karate and Tae-Kwon Do schools took over.

That's why all the best boxers are all Japanese and Korean. Ali, Robinson, Tyson, Mayweather, all of them.

Actually martial arts don't compete with boxing because rich kids do martial arts and poor kids do boxing it's the exact opposite Spectrum of participation

do you think somebody like Mike Tyson would have succeeded if he didn't have a low cost high quality facility for training?

If it cost $150 a month to train in boxing how many of those Stars you named would have made it?

Back in the 50s boxing and wrestling training was available in every major city for a pittance and guess what we did a lot better in the Olympics back then

martial arts training in America cost a lot because the insurance cost a lot so basically your private for profit insurance providers are dictating how much it cost to train in martial arts in the United States

If we had high quality martial arts training at your local community center we would have a lot more Champions cuz guess what poor kids fight better than rich kids

how many American champions never made it because they couldn't afford training in mixed martial arts?

They are number one in all divisions and is not even close. Both in quantity and quality. And that's MMA rankings not just UFC. Just look at tapology and fightmatrix. Brazil is #2 and Russia #3 far away from the rest. The rest are all far behind which tells that this sport is dominated by just 3 countries.

So no...

USA won the 77/88kg at ADCC last. In general the US has performed better in NOGI world competitions than ever before. That doesn't count to you though seemingly.

You're so dedicated to this notion of the USA "falling behind" yet you ignore mounds of statistical facts that you're dead fucking wrong.

How many boxing champions are US? Who's the current world female judo champion (Olympics)? How many MMA top ten rankings are dominated by the US?

471 boxing world champions are from American by the way..

Health?
Education?
Infrastucture?
Home owership?

Sure.

MMA?

Nah.

So no...

8/25 of the current top ranked heavyweights are American...

THAT'S 32% !!!!!!

http://rankingmma.com/ufc-rankings/heavyweight/

Don't just look at the UFC...

Do ALL THE MATH and America SUCKS AT MMA!!!!

So it's ok to build MILLION $ public facilities with tax money for all kinds of team sports yet DENY COMBAT ATHLETES access to the facilities???

I think part of the reason is that money that sucks in America is great money in a lot of other places.

Switch. Unless you count WMMA.

Yeah...i would count adcc as a
Combat sport we get STOMPED IN
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADCC_Submission_Wrestling_World_Championship
Clearly you haven't done ANY MATH on combat athletics medal and championship counts or even bothered to read all the data I compiled...

The USA is currently.....

MIA in sambo
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_(martial_art)

MIA in karate
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_World_Karate_Championships

MIA in kickboxing
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glory_(kickboxing)

5 out of SEVENTEEN 17 (29%)!!! Of Weight classes in pro boxing is held by the USA
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_world_boxing_champions

15th in judo
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judo_at_the_Summer_Olympics

14th in fencing
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrestling_at_the_Summer_Olympics

A distant 3rd in TKD
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taekwondo_at_the_Summer_Olympics

A distant 2nd in wrestling
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrestling_at_the_Summer_Olympics

At least we have boxing...not pro by any stretch but Olympic ...
One freaking combat sport
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_at_the_Summer_Olympics

It's not that...its all about acess.

Notice we ONLY hang in boxing and wrestling...the ONLY 2 sports that were in the school and community center programs back in the day

Just imagine if we HAD low cost martial arts and freestyle wrestling...
we would be #1 across the board

Collectively, by your own data, who out performs the US? No one is catching Japan in judo, or TKD, Karate for Korea, and Sambo is a regional art..

And winng ADCC this last year was huge, it clearly shows our competitiveness in submission grappling is getting better.

I don't know what you're looking for besides being emotional about it... You want my tax dollars to pay for Karate gyms? Sambo gyms?

Nah.

America is falling behind in education, that I believe and that I'd support reform in a second..

no wonder we suck so bad at martial arts we can't even get to the first base in the discussion!!!!

I do not expect the state to open martial arts gyms

I do not expect the state to open martial arts gyms

I do not expect the state to open martial arts gym

do you people copy this basic concept?

Here we are 20 Pages later and no one can even grasp the concept of PUBLIC GYM ACCESS

We spend millions of dollars to build football, basketball, soccer and swimming facilities yet we don't allow martial arts at these facilities...poor kids can go play these sports and better themselves but NO MARTIAL ARTS ACCESS!!!!

all I'm asking for is that martial artists are allowed to USE THESE FACILITIES!!!!!

I never expected the state to build a martial arts studio!!!!

I JUST WANT THEM TO HAVE A PLACE TO TRAIN!!!!!

All over the rest of the world the local community centers and sports facilities have nemorous martial arts programs at a tiny cost

(because it's a PUBLIC GYM)

In AMERICA martial arts are 99% private for profit businesses

Poor kids DON'T LEARN MARTIAL ARTS IN AMERICA!!!!

Poor kids make the best fighters!!!!

I have been a PUBLIC SCHOOL WRESTLING COACH FOR 20 YEARS AND THESE KIDS ARE OFTEN POOR...THEY HAVE NO ACESS TO MARTIAL ARTS...BECAUSE OF WRESTLING THEY (FOR THE 1ST TIME IN THEIR LIVES)
ARE EXPOSED TO QUALITY COMBAT SPORTS TRAINING!!!!

AND GUESS WHAT THEY BECOME EFFICIENT FIGHTERS ONLY BECAUSE THEY HAD WRESTLING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!!!!

IF THEY DID NOT HAVE WRESTLING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS WE PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE ANY MMA CHAMPS IN AMERICA!!!!!!!!

I got it. Opening already public facilities to MMA is worth while, the stigma around these sports needs to change. I just wish I had understood your emphasis on this point specifically from your original post. I see it now.
