I believe it in this case. The UFC are asking Islam to give up his 155 pound belt, which he absolutely doesn't have to and no matter what people say he can absolutely sue the UFC if they strip him. Boxers have successfully sued organizations for stripping them of championship belts in contrary to policies + precedent.

It would be smart of Ali to get a legally binding guarantee that Islam will get a 170 pound title shot by the end of 2025. The UFC aren't in a position to say no to that.

The UFC needed Islam to vacate willingly and not fight them, because crybaby Topuria was refusing an interim title fight @ UFC 317.

I'd personally like to see a more aggressive policy for stripping champions. 8 months since your last title fight is plenty. If you can't defend within 8 months, you should be stripped.

But the UFC can't do that until they strip Jon Jones, which Dana seems unwilling to do.

I highly doubt there would be a specific contractual guarantee that would necessarily bring about the situation described.

It would be one thing to contractually guarantee that Islam's next fight is for the 170 title in exchange for him moving up and vacating the 155 title...it would be quite another for that guarantee to include a specific timeline, that the existing champ will be stripped if he is not ready, etc.

There is no motivation for the UFC to surrender its decision-making power like that. Shit happens and the UFC likes to have the flexibility to essentially do whatever the fuck it wants.

IMHO, Ali is posturing/promoting for his fighter...at best, Dana has said that if JDM is out for a long time, they will revisit the situation.
