Ulberg is clearly getting a titleshot eventually. UFC seems to be taking him slower up the ranks, probably for good reason, he needs to round out his game better.

It all comes down to how motivated the UFC is in making a trilogy fight. I would imagine if Poatan gets the belt back and at his age they're gonna want to do more super fights or big fights for him.

I feel like this is by design.
Carlos is fighting someone 8 years older than him tomorrow night, with 2 years ring rust, and recovering from surgery.
He's a very active fighter in the LHW division, so it wouldn't surprise me if Poatan/Ulberg ends up happening shortly after Ank/Poatan.

Judging by the UFC favorable matchup history you might be onto something. This seems to be a very common way of paving the road for up and comers for title shots or just to climb the rankings. Paddy fighting Chandler is a another example.

they have to have marketable fighters and ulberg has the look. athletic, somewhat younger, and whatever he is. its vastly different from the jiri / ion cutableaba / jan and old man still doing the damn thing types. they need marketable young people. people have boomer aversion. lol. it is what it is. ulberg did not win that last fight at all.

It seems pretty obvious that they're giving Ulberg a golden ticket to the top of the division. LHW is basically logjammed (especially if Alex has the belt), so the UFC is fast-tracking a fresh contender.
