Anyone else miss Japan?

Dude it was amazing, went with my wife and daughter we hit up Osaka Kyoto and Tokyo over 11 days.

The temples are cool, shopping is fun, food is amazing. I would definitely recommend.

Hey mate how Olds your daughter? Thinking of doing the same but my girl is just 18 months and not sure if we should take advantage of that and go now or wait til she can have a distant memory of the place..

My daughter turned 9 August 3rd she was 8 for half the trip... I would say i don't think she has any memories traveling prior to about 5 or 6.... but you could enjoy it the trip with your wife as long as the 18 month isn't a crier.

I think you were confused about the ending of Oppenheimer. Japan still exists. Only 2 cities were atomic bombed.

One FC puts on banger events.

One FC>Ufc

Been watching UFC for like 13 years, and Bellator and PFL since they started.

Only really gotten into ONE since the start of the year, and honestly, the difference in quality between ONE and all the the rest is ridiculous. ONE is just so far ahead.

Their weekly MT focused cards are better than whatever UFC are putting on these days. Even the few banger UFC PPVs usually aren't on the same level.

ONE's production value is way better too. Cool enough entrances with a ramp and a bit of spectacle and light show for every fighter, but they don't drag it all out. Meanwhile, UFC fighters just walk out from side entrance with some music you can barely hear, and no lights or anything.

UFC events often have garbage pacing. Too many finishes and they do all the boring filler segments, espeically when they have to wait for the main card slot to start for their broadcast partners. Just so much crap. Meanwhile, One just powers through a card.

Better commentators. Mitch in ONE has more energy about what he's watching than all of the UFC commentators combined. His post fight interviews blow away anything DC or Rogan do.

Lots of respect for their staff and fighters too. Loved how they gave that ref that committed suicide an awesome send off, and all the effort they put in when Victoria Lee died too.

I don't miss Japanese guys wearing loincloths playing traditional drums.

I know

But it's not the same

When pride held the cards

They had the best

It was different

Yes that's how I feel. Unfortunately I don't think it can be recreated. They had the best talent at the time, the best artistic production with Sakikibara, and it was also a special moment in time where martial arts was still shrouded in mystery to some extent.

The fighters were from all around the world and Pride did a great job of exaggerating their personas and making the aura of these larger than life characters. The huge crowds and dramatic presentation also made it feel like the Olympics or something.

Never got the obsession over the quiet crowds and I don't buy that it's a respect thing. It's purely cultural, I am sure. If the Japanese "fans" actually respected the art and the fighters then the freakshow fights, squash matches and obvious fixed fights would never have been tolerated and mma wouldn't have died out there. It was nothing but a circus and passing fad to them. No, I don't miss jmma.

They could have replaced Pride years ago if they wanted to. You're more into it than the actual Japanese. It's almost anime fan levels of identity issues with you Pride fanboys.

US fans have been pretty terrible at every event I have ever been to, but hopefully they are at least more knowledgeable now.

I think they're getting better. I notice they do cheer/get excited for interesting grappling transitions now, they just boo when people are holding or fence pushing, which I can't really blame them for because it bores me too.

Main issue with ONE as an MMA fan is that the MMA roster just isn't very good for a top tier promotion (UFC, Bellator, ACA and PFL for sure have much higher quality fighters). I get the sense they're moving away from MMA to be more focused on the kickboxing, which is cool for people who like that.

No, pankration in itself was wrestling and striking. It wasn’t multiple fighting styles from different parts of the world fighting under 1 “no rules” environment, ie. boxing vs karate, or BJJ vs sambo etc.

You're wrong. It was just that, with as broad of a scope as was possible at the times. Of course they couldn't fly in athletes from China or Japan, wtf do you expect
Essentially the only rules that existed in the Olympic version of pankration prohibited pankratiasts from eye gouging, biting, and striking the opponent’s genitals. The only reason you can't compare Pankration to MMA is that Pankration was way way more brutal.

Different fighting styles clashed, and so did different "nationalities" and heritages.

Yep. The MMA is lacking.

It's weird though. It's not like the MMA fights are bad. Most of the ones they've put on this year have been bangers. They just don't have enough high level fighters, or the guys they do have that are good don't get to fight enough.

Not too sure if they're moving away from MMA as such. They're trying to do more big MMA centric cards. They've got a few more planned for this year for the states and I assume even more for Singapore. They're also putting at least 2-3 MMA fights on each of the Fight Night cards, which helps grow that area for them. Those Friday Night cards are always going to be MT focused just because of where they take place.

They need to do more of course, and I think they will. Things seem to keep going better and better for ONE. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that leads to them pushing harder with MMA. I think we'll see them get a lot fighters from the Bellator closure. The UFC aren't going to take them all. They'd rather just buy way cheaper DWCS fighters, and their roster is bloated as it is. And PFL wouldn't know what to do with them.

They used to be more MMA than they are now. A few years ago if was probably 70% MMA fights. Now it's 2-3 fights a card and they have stupid shit like not having their SW champion fight all year and then book him against Mikey Musumeci in grappling.

I'd almost rather they just became a MT and grappling promotion at this point as it seems a lot of the MMA fighters are having a tough time getting booked.

If the anti-trust case gets more serious (it already is) for the US, I wouldn't put it past them to drop their fighter rankings and turn the walkouts into WWE/Pride style entrances. And the UFC and WWE are owned by the same company Endeavor anyway, Dana will probably stress again that its all just entertainment.

Unless you're that mongolian guy. He seems to get MMA matches like every 2 months haha.

Wonder what this sweetheart gets into after dark…

What gets into this sweetheart....

Yeah I'm sure you were alive for Pankration in the ancient Olympics and miss it dearly.

<36>

I can just picture you at events having a hissy fit when there's a takedown and wondering why Conor isn't on the card.

Conor wasn't around in the Ancient Olympics, it was his ancestor The Mad Celt Connobar McMathgamain who caused a ruckus among the greeks at that time.
