Anthony Smith is probably done in the top

yeah he has taken too much damage. Clearly isn't the same fighter he was 5 years ago. He's still not old for lhw but some fighters just age worse than others in this game. 4 years ago he would have demolished JW

The guys had 54 fights, too many fight miles.

No chin, no stamina. He's lucky he's got his analyst job to fall on.

I'll always like him for derailing guys like Crute, Spann and Clark. Honestly that's probably the best run he had since it didn't come against older guys + Volkan, but yeah, Smith was never at the top. Very much the definition of a gatekeeper.

Did you ever expect him to be a champ for some reason? Other than by an easy path or fluke?

The only other person I have seen with such an inexplicable desire to white knight for Anthony Smith is Luke Thomas.
Here you go again disrespecting other men who aren’t even present about things that truly have nothing to do with mma. I’ll let you know when I need your opinion on another man outside the present convo boss. You seem to have strong feelings about one too many men for me to keep track of. Not that there’s anything wrong with that

He's never been a "top" fighter his entire career.

We are talking about Johnny Walker here. Yes, Anthony Smith would have absolutely wrecked him back then

Thats a day dream.

Anthony Smith is a middle of the pack journeyman who got the shit kicked out of him by Josh Neer.

His wins are largely washed up guys and he has a morale victory of getting dominated by Jones but surviving 5 rounds.

He's always been solid, but the UFC LHW division is just bad. Not unlike HW

It's a miracle he even had a UFC career. Anthony Smith came at the right time and picked a couple of good matchups. But I agree his window of opportunity at the top is long gone.

If I was him I would look for top 12-15 opponents from now on.

I keep seeing this gif in Anthony Smith threads... what's the story behind it?

Hate to break it to you, but he was only 'in the top' when the division was completely cleaned out and rebuilding. He's never had the skills to be an elite LHW, in any era. He was just prime in a time when a lot of guys were nearing the end of their career and there was nobody else to get their ass beat by Jones that hadn't already.

Basically this guy on gif named Luke Haberman was an intruder who entered Smith house 3 years ago at night. Smith detailed his encounter with a home invader as "terrifying" and "one of the toughest" he ever experienced.

"No normal human is able to fight like that," Smith said. "I'm by no means the baddest dude on the planet. But he's a regular Joe and I had a hard time dealing with him. And he took everything that I gave him—every punch, every knee, every elbow. He took every single one of them and kept fighting me."

Turned out the intruder was a former standout High School wrestling champion.

After the incident Smith was never the same and lost to Glover and Rakic.

Yesterday during the fight vs Walker he had a flashback and you could hear him saying to Walker: "You are trying to hurt my family". Which was very weird.

This is the story.

I still don't understand how Anthony couldn't put away some college student. If that was like any other fighter his size, they would have probably floored him.

I honestly have no idea how he managed a resurgence. Always felt he peaked a long time ago, and that he frankly wasn't ever a title contender. A great gatekeeper though.

Never saw him at the top, beat a few known names who were semi retired, old, shot or all the things together.

Wow! That does explain it! That incident messed him up long term.
I fell sorry for him now.
