This is a huge point. I stated earlier that getting kids to participate internationally as cadets and juniors is more important than switching to freestyle. What youre talking about is a vehicle by which that can happen. The proof is in the pudding and if you look at the current crop of NCAA wrestlers who also took advantage of our cadet/junior system you have guys guys like Yianni who can defeat the world #1 freestyler almost immediately after finishing a folkstyle season. I am sure he didn't train much freestyle in-season.

The true problem with his argument is that the elite kids are getting the hybrid coaching and crushing the state and local tournaments while they train all 3 styles. The elite kids go to the national tournaments and smash the average state level kids who smash his team. And are on the trajectory he drooled over talking about Cuba on the way to developing into world champs. Yianni and Darin Fix being the easiest examples.

Switching to a shitty halfway version of freestyle wouldn’t magically catapult the US into “dominating” an established power like Russia either in 8 years either. He wouldn’t know this due to not knowing how to coach good or elite athletes. It wouldn’t magically fix the real issues behind the numbers dropping either.

I personally think he so desperately wants even a shitty version of freestyle so he can finally beat up on the southern teams that don’t have coaches who coached freestyle. And finally get the credit he “thinks” he deserves. Though it would be fun to see his kids repeatedly giving up 4s because he’s so obsessed with freestyle rolls and hasn’t kept up with the rules

It won’t magically fix grassroots wrestling to implement a shit halfway version of freestyle because you can’t teach basic tilts, so your kids are extra clueless on how to gut wrench.

Let’s say it switched. Actually answer some practical questions instead of grandiose statements about it magically filling up rooms overnight.

1. How would you keep many of the grassroots programs from stopping because they don’t know the style? Because now the kids aren’t wrestling AT ALL
2. How would you pay for the coaches education courses to minimize the loss of local coaches.
3. How would you fix the fact that switching would make wrestling a rich club sport south of Mason Dixon line but probably continue just fine up north because most northern coaches grew up with freestyle and Greco.. southern coaches did not.
4. In what way does switching effect the grassroots level beyond being sorta similar when the elite kids are going to RTCs and getting world class (not Gavin worthless) coaching already?
5. What ways will you do fundraising, politicking, and the admin side to give wrestling a Chance to catch basketball and football?
6. What actual ways will you expand and grow wrestling beyond the Kommando/hillbilly territory and rich suburbs it mostly resides in today?

Maybe if you actually gave real practical answers to questions like this.. beyond things like whining about locked hands because you spend too much practice time on the mat to begin with.. people would have actually given you some credit.
