All Time GOAT poll

Here's some things against Jon:

Of course it can be debated but I try to stay objective when it comes to these things.

Silva beat his contemporaries (MMA wise). Jon came in when the old guard had already had their time. The legends of LHW had gone through rigorous battles by then. Great timing played a factor.

The other thing is the big names at LHW. This doesn't necessarily speak to the level of competition, but rather just that they were close in competition. Stylistic match ups allowed many different guys to attain the belt (but no one could hold on to it for that long). Thus bolstering their status (and the LHW division overall). When Jon fought the younger guys, he didn't look as good. These guys didn't have the name value of the previous legends that Jon fought but were still tough(er) competition, which speaks to my point.

I'm not saying that Jon wouldn't have been the best at LHW. I'm just saying that is part of why he was successful and why it looks better on paper.

Anyway, I'm not trying to win an argument or change your mind, just giving you some things to consider. I don't care who someone thinks is GOAT, I just want people to try to think deeper and objectively rather than just pick who they like best.

What really sets Jones back is the size advantage he often enjoyed over his opponents (as opposed to guys wth top5 wins in three different weightclasses), PEDs, and some very dubious judges decisions he got awarded.

Downplaying competition like GSP fanboys do to discredit Silva is pretty stupid to me when talking about champions that cleaned out their division for so many years.

In my book yea...

The PED game doesn't really matter...

But then again GoAT is a masterbatory concept...

I'll stick with "One of..."

Call me old school, but I'm a fan of Ken Shamrock and Forrest Griffin. Randy Couture is another high on my list.

I see a lot of threads lately talking about BJ Penn and GOAT in the same sentence.

Let's be clear, he's not in GOAT discussion, his record of 16-14 is embarrassing.. and 16-15 if we count the KO by a drunk.

Now, before you respond to say I wasn't around to witness him in his prime.. I in fact did witness his prime. I saw him lose to GSP twice and make up excuses.. saw him lose to Matt Hughes in the rematch..

And of course the one that sticks out the most, was seeing him outclassed three times (twice in his prime) to Frankie Edgar. Go watch those fights, they were very one sided and BJ Penn had nothing to offer. Even his corner had no advice for him in between rounds as they were shocked that BJ Penn was an inferior fighter.

There is no way BJ Penn should be in the GOAT discussion. Not 10 years ago.. and not today.

BJ Penn was rightly in the GOAT discussion up until a couple of years ago, when Khabib surpassed him as LW GOAT. Obviously if you’re not even the GOAT of your division, you can’t be in the overall GOAT discussion.

While I don't think he's the goat by any means he did accomplish great things in the sport and had a fighters heart. I personally dislike bj as a person he's arrogant and self-centered but again his early career he was very hard to beat. He declined as all do when they get older. Looks at the ending record doesn't tell the story of a career. Look at Anderson Silva.

BJ Penn has his era... but at the end of the day his down spiral was one of the most embarrassing in the sport. He was a great fighter when he won the 155 title and had his little run. But after he just went to shit.

Neither is Khabib. So let’s be clear about that.

But if we’re talking about overall.. I’ll take the guy that has the same amount of defences. As well as a second belt in a higher weight division. To me it’s not even close. If you want to claim Khabib is the LW GOAT for a few years until he gets passed by, knock yourself out. But that is literally where any GOAT talk of Khabib ends.
