Alan Ritchson or Tom Cruise - Who do you prefer as Jack Reacher?

Who do you prefer more as Jack Reacher?

Obviously Alan is better than smug midget scientologist Tom.

He is however a bit too muscular. Reacher doesnt work out every day, hes a hobo essentially. Alan looks like a upper-level amateur bodybuilder that lives in the gym. I thought reacher is like 230 -250 at 6'5 in the books, naturally broad and strong. It doesnt quite fit.
 
I love Alan as Reacher, but he isn't a fraction of the actor that Cruise is. Of course Cruise didn;t match the physical description, but I thought that doesn't matter anymore? It's ok to race, gender, and sexual orientation swap but not height? What gives? James Bond alone turned Moneypenny black, Felix black, and Q Gay. We know what happened to Mermaids and Snow White. Anyone that complained was labeled racist and the defenders said "it's fiction" it doesn't matter because they are not real people. Well, neither is Reacher.

He comes from a family of smart people. His brother was working Secret service focusing on money laundry.
He is huge and not a gym rat, got the muscles from hard work and genetics. There is a few jabs at gym bros in some of the books.

Alan is imo too polished and clearly a roided out gym bro.
I always pictured him looking like a smaller Brock Lesnar. More fat on the body but huge as hell and strong.

He doesn't start out looking like a gym rat but in the second or third book he does come to look like one from digging swimming pools in Key West
 
Tom Cruise.
The other guy isn’t a strong enough actor. Or maybe the script just sucks, IDK. But the show was boring as fuck. I tried to stick it out for the first season but just was not compelled to continue watching.
 
character doesn't require some oscar level acting. it's supposed to be fun. tom, while singlehandedly keeping Hollywood alive, doesn't fit in this one.
and i love we found a genuinely brutal hulking dude that looks the part of the book character.

This. Read a single Reacher novel and it's immediately apparent who the only choice is to play the role. Reacher's massive size and strength is a defining character trait. He is described in one of the earlier novels as looking like, "A condom stuffed with walnuts". Fans have joked that Reacher is Sherlock Holmes played by Prime Schwarzenegger. :)

Cruise as Reacher only works for someone going in blind, with zero knowledge of the source material.

Reacher mentions he doesn't like exercising, apart from walking, and hasn't trained regularly since he left the Army.

Some fans have theorised that Reacher's huge size and strength stems from the real-life genetic mutation that removes the limits on the body's ability to grow muscle. It's rare, but it does exist, and people with this gene can walk around looking like Full Training Camp Sherdoggers even if they don't actually Lift.

Ritchson admits he skips Leg Day. Partly because he's training for a role, not a sport, so he concentrates on the glamour muscles the camera will focus on: shoulders, arms, pecs and abs. But also because he suffers from a hip impingement that makes most types of squatting very painful for him. He does a kind of cable squat variation to train his legs.

In a video, Ritchson said he trains mostly with high reps and rarely maxes out. But occasionally he will train heavy, and managed to Bench 350 for multiple reps.

"Just don't ask me to Squat; I'd be lucky to put up 145".

I've read the books, plural, which is why I laughed hysterically when I heard that 5'7'' 150-pound Tom Cruise was going to play a 6'5'' 250-pound hulk. I was bigger than Cruise at 14. He had no business playing that character. It was silly. And to add insult to injury, he wasn't even much of a bad ass. He nearly gets killed in a bathroom in the first film and then loses a fight with help so it's 2-on-1 in the second one. It's like if they remade Predator and cast Tom Holland, Timothée Chalamet, Jerrod Carmichael, Kevin Hart, Harry Styles, John Mulaney, and Elliott Page to run around the jungle scared and crying.

Tom Cruise is a much better actor and a much bigger star, it's fine if you like him and his movies more, but he's not Jack Reacher.

he has no business playing the character according to how the book portrays him, yeah I get it. But I didn't read the books so it didn't bother me, I'm guessing that's the same for others who haven't read the books but enjoyed the film.

And we're back to my original post, which you weirdly took issue with even though you just said the same thing that I did: Anyone who picks Tom Cruise knows and cares nothing about the books or the character. Simple as that.

Why would I need to care about the books if there is movie? Seems like you are taking issue with people who enjoy the movie and haven't read the books tbh.
