Social Afghans arrive in the Philippines to complete visa processing for resettlement in US

It's mainly people that worked for the US in Afghanistan but were left behind.

I did some charity work with refugees when I was in college. Sometimes they dump you in a house or apartment in the bad part of town. There will be some support system and guidance. It is usually connected to some religious organization. You are expected to fend for yourself after a while. Some of them can do it while the others can't due to age or language barrier. It's a bit sad when refugees tell you that they rather go back because America is bad. Living in the hood isn't easy.

Yeah. Even here, with relatively generous welfare, education and employment opportunities, one of the young guys told me he intended to go back to Afghanistan when he could (he was getting a lot of surgery for third degree burns), as Australia was too Mickey Mouse for him (can't remember how he phrased it, but that was what he meant).
Despite, or perhaps because of, the threats to his life including nearly getting blown up in Kabul, he said he felt more alive there than here.

Why?! We don't need them. Why must we spend our money and risk our security? I hate our government.

Because a lot of them are the ones who risked their lives and the lives of their families to help US forces in Afghanistan.

Been deployed to the stan 3 times. Never once saw a female interpreter. Worked with countless Afghan dudes that rarely showered even when they had the opportunity to. Just saw them was their feet in the sinks everyday though. Other than the poor hygiene they were decent mild mannered dudes.

Had bad was the opium addiction? Some of the videos I've seen were nuts... Especially that Vice documentary

So what is it with Indians and Afghans not taking a shower?

Is it some cultural thing because it gets very cold up there?

Or this is just a poor people thing?

I grew up poor and I used to stink!
TBH I don t buy it. Pretty much all the people I met from Afghanistan all the way to Morocco were extremely clean, even obsessively so.

Which Afghans are the US taking in?
I've encountered a lot of the Hazara here in Oz, and although no doubt it'll take a while for them to reach socioeconomic parity with the general population, they've been doing pretty well for refugees with the first generation and their children (now young adults).
Only time I've seen them make the news was recently when a Uni student managed to get himself lost in the bush for 2 weeks over Christmas with only 2 muesli bars he found in a camping shack to live off. They found him alive and well today apparently.
Academically they seem to be doing quite well in terms of valuing the opportunities afforded. Is college education available for refugees in the US?
In my experience Hazaras and Tadjik Afghans are the most educated. Pashtuns are extremely conservative and tribal.

which means they betrayed their own people and country to help foreign invaders. What makes you think they can be trusted? Get rid of them before it's too late.

Not sure. I guess they were just living how they were used to. Indians? I have only been to India a couple times so my experience is not gonna be super accurate. Plus that's a whole nother can of worms I'm not gonna get into without hurting some feelings.
Is it some cultural thing because it gets very cold up there?
It's a country of both extremes. In the summer it gets super hot and dry. In the winter time it was get super cold. Especially in the north.
Or this is just a poor people thing? I grew up poor and I used to stink!
I guess it was just their way of life.

In 2003/2004 I had a lot of interaction with the Afghans that would do daily work on the base. Clean up stuff, stack sand bags, remove rodents etc etc. Many of them had that "opium stare". During lunch they'd sit and trance out and pass it off as "oh I was praying".

It's a shame then Trump agreed to an unrealistic withdrawal
Obviously you have never been to Afghanistan. There was NOTHING "unrealistic" about that withdrawal. Is what screwed us up is that we didn't evacuate all the visa holders and contractors before the military left.
with Taliban without involving the Afghan government,
Didn't want to negotiate the withdrawal with the most corrupt government in that continent? ooohh daaang... gosh no :((
and then magatards ragged on Biden the entire time after for 'secretly' flying them in.
meh... not all of us. Some of those dudes I probably knew and would recognize on the street if I saw them again. But obviously we didn't get em all out.

I didn't say the withdrawal was unrealistic. I said the time table Trump negotiated was unrealistic. If you're going to necro quote a post I made weeks ago, at least try reading it. There simply was not enough time between the close of negotiations and the withdrawal date to get everyone and everything out of Afghanistan. Biden had to redeploy troops to manage the situation Trump had setup for him. There were only 2500 troops in the entire country when Biden took office.

The plan wasn't to turn the country over to the Taliban, it was to turn it over to the Afghan government, it just turned out that way in the end. Perhaps involving the Afghan government themselves may have led to more realistic timetables and better outcomes? Probably not, but excluding them for the process entirely certainly wasn't going to lead to a positive outcome.

I don't care if you had some empathy for the Afghans left behind or being brought over, the entire maga movement used Afghan immigration issue as a political cudgel ever since.

And I'm saying that also. There was nothing wrong with the time table. Heck... It even got pushed back when it didn't need to be.

I did read it.

Everyone? yes there was. Everything? We were gonna leave most of the equipment there for the Aghan Army anyways.

There should have never been so many leave UNDER Biden no matter what was "set up".
There were only 2500 troops in the entire country when Biden took office.
I can tell you that was absolutely not true by posting that comment though.... You know what you just proved IS try though? You never served, never been to Afghanistan etc etc... There were MANY more than that spread throughout Afghanistan.

Which we did turn it over to the Afghan government. We told them this. But just didn't negotiate with them since the only thing they wanted to hear was "we are gonna stay forever". And we weren't having it.

Oh we told them we were gonna leave. They immediately stopped paying the Afghan Army's salary. Which was another reason why the Army dropped their weapons and fled without a shot fired.

Tell me exactly what your idea of a positive outcome for this situation... Good luuuuck!

"movement" of what? must have been a small movement because barely noticed it.

Afghans have the second highest arrests per 1,000 of the population in the UK. Something for our American friends to look forward to.

IF these are the ones that worked with us then that’s the price. We have to stop ducking leaving people behind

Man this post is so all over the place and contradictory I'm not even going to bother any further.

Says the guy (girl?) that speaks from such an ignorant/keyboarder/do nothing position... I got nothing to worry about on your opinion.
