Apparently Apex cage is 48,12 m2 and standard is almost 70m2.

What's the reason for this ?

It's quite common in other sports. Tennis has different surfaces, baseball fields have vastly different dimensions, soccer teams have different field sizes also.
Ya that't true. It does change the dimension of the game a lot, for better or worse. Strange that the UFC would do it though since its just a ring/octagon.

Different surface MMA would be fun. Octagon on ice!

kicks with ice skates on would be fun. decapitation via a nice roundhouse!

Rephrased, what is the reason for the previous octagon being larger than the APEX one?

They saved the extra money to buy big Macs and Quarter Pounders.

Or.....the regulations allow octagon size to vary within certain limits

The
That never made sense to me. There is no way you couldn't fit the larger cage in a smaller venue. Ok... and if the Apex somehow is just too small why the fuck not build the room w the octagon five feet longer/wider?
The UFC has always preferred to use a smaller cage because it promotes more action and finishes. The only reason they got into the habit of using a bigger cage is because the smaller cage looks strange in big arenas.

As said previously it's in a smaller arena, so it's to save space. It was probably designed that way because it's original purpose was to house things like Contender Series, where they want to encourage fast paced fights with finishes.
