4 Year Liberal Arts Colleges Struggling

Add to the lower birthrate.... you have less males attending college. in 2023 they make up 42%, in 2011 they made up 47%. I don't know if this is only white males... or just males.

Why would you think it's only white males?

Wait, I know why.

But anyway, the gender gap in higher education is actually MORE pronounced among nonwhite males.

I returned to my Alma mater, Loras College (Dubuque IA) last month as part of their external advisory board.

They are not doing great, they saw a significant decline in enrollment last year.

I’m talking about a change from one period to another. I made that pretty clear.

If I’m talking about a change from one year to another it makes sense to question whether that male drop off is primarily driven by one group.

But anyway, the gender gap change from one point to another is probably not MORE pronounced amongst a group that historically was not as represented.

Are talking just liberal arts schools or programs? Because my BA bachelors has proved the best thing I’ve ever done. Yes, there was a lot of quasi-indoctrination from required social classes, but if you are changing your belief system just because of what some professor says, well, speaks more on mental fortitude. Even those classes have provided me insights into appropriate communication. Probably not worth the money I spent to take them. I suppose it’s about the personal value and accomplishment. A positive achiever mindset that you feed and train just makes you a better person.

And college? Probably has nothing to do with the loss of generational wealth/purchasing power due to an extremely corrupt profit/debt system. My grandparents had it pretty good, my parents not as much, and I was born in their abject poverty. It’s not like they didn’t work as hard as my grandparents, the economic circumstances were different.

Not giving anything a pass here, just not trying to dog the shit out of everything I don’t agree with.

I keep trying to talk my 16 year old into trade school, but my ex wife and her family are all big on college degrees, he lives with her so I'm probably going to lose this battle.
Please don't give up the fight if you know it is in his best interests long-term. Use your Dad powers and keep hammering that nail. Some guys just are not meant for certain things, and skilled tradesmen can make just as much if they set themselves up for success.

They make decent foreman in construction. I know 2. 1 majored in philosophy and the other social work . 1 couldn't find a job (philosophy) the other (social work) slowly realized 12 -15 bucks and hour just wasn't cutting it no matter how much he liked his job.

I know. My father is a 40+ year licensed master plumber. The problem is, my dad was the youngest of 7 of depression era grandparents who didn't have much. So it was always save save save and finance as little as possible.

(TLDR - My kid doesn't see what trades can actually do for you, because the master tradesman in the family doesn't make it obvious. He does see second home and spoiling from his mother's side.. I'm fighting an uphill battle but I won't give up.)

...I grew up thinking we were at the lower end of middle class because my parents gave me hand me downs, yard sale specials,ect... never clicked that dad was making double mortgage payments on the house, him and mom's vehicles were both paid off and no credit card debt...

I didnt see it, or appreciate it. I thought my parents couldn't afford shit, as an adult...Holy Shit totally fucking wrong. I was upper middle class raised poor, and I thank them for the tough love.

At dinner last night I asked my daughter if they have those mental health days. She answered it's for the liberal arts and not for engineering. Then they complain how hard their course is, she added, almost laughing.

they live in fairy tale land where all this bs will actually come true one day when it won't

You know society is falling when the idea of schools closing gives half the population a hard on

I always hated how often my project managers would come from completely unrelated fields.
